Really Long Starting

Hi Everyone,

Had my rx8 for a while now, but ever since i bought it i have to hold the key for at least 5-7 full seconds before it turns over. If i reset the PCM/ unplug battery the car starts in 3-4 seconds but then its back to normal 5-7 next time i try. Any suggestions?

P.S: Replaced plugs and wires so that can be ruled out

Did you replace the coils, as well? They are a known weak point after about 15k miles. Also, have a look at the following link. It has a lot of info on maintaining your 8:

I have driven the car for 9000km personally. I know that its some problem in the ignition (either coils or starter), I just don't want to drop $250 in upgrading the coils if the starter is the problem. Is there any way to tell the difference in symptoms between the two?

Also note: Brand new optima battery installed last month

If i do run OEM coils, ill be going with the Version C, which are JDM, because the north american version A/B are garbage. Otherwize its BHR ignition i suppose :l

For the starter, try calling a good, reputable starter and alternator rebuilder. Most will do a bench test of starters to determine whether they are functioning according to factory specs. If not, they will be able to quote a price to replace the unit or to rebuild it giving you a choice of actions. Since the battery is new, just pull the starter and take it to the one you chose for bench testing. A quick Google search listed 2 in Toronto that looked promising. One on Dundas and one on O'Connor drive.

As for coils, this is one topic that has several viewpoints. As a whole, many would choose BHR for performance and longevity but there are others that are perfectly content using OEM or aftermarket coils and replacing them as needed (about every 15 to 20k miles). I actually started a thread on this very topic that contained enough posts to give you a synopsis of opinions and might help you choose which is best for you based on your car usage and budget.
