Question Radio/HVAC

I currently have a Turbo 2 aftermarket radio bracket and adapter so I can use a genaric radio in my 8. I dont have a radio in it currently, but the red display above the radio area does not come on and the only HVAC control that works is the fan. I want to test the ac and i have an old radio from around 1999 for a ford. Im guessing that the HVAC goes through the radio, and if it does then will the one from 99 work? (The turbo 2 kit also has this little chip that everything plugs into idk if that is part of the HVAC system and mabye it just needs the radio to complete the connection?) Or should that all come on even with no radio? Things to check or another way to test the A/C?

The controller for the A/C and the display is part of the head unit.

If you want to go to an aftermarket head unit you need a Metrix kit or something like that that has the controller and the adapter for the wiring

The Turbo 2 is basically a re-brand of metrix.
