Rack & Pinion CRACKED in half

yes you read that right. I was going over my car i recently bought and found the rack is cracked literally in half. i would of never known it was like this as it drives fine with no noises. Has anyone else ever had this happen before?

I was also wondering if anyone had experience in overhauling these racks. I ask b/c the break is on the intermediate shaft side so i was thinking of swapping a used one and retaining my motor since its programmed to the car as i hear if i change the entire thing, Mazda will have to do a centering procedure.

Well that is a first. You probably tightened the zip tie too tight.

it was in an accident in 2011 so its mind blowing to know he was driving it for so long (30k miles) and with me driving it for the 2 days ive had it, i felt nothing wrong with the steering.

So, you can't control the direction of the car but it will sound nice as it crashes into the cement truck...

I would try and get the body shop who did the work to cover it or the insurance company. Typically insurance repairs come with a lifetime guarantee.

Warranty on collison work only applies to the original owner.
