Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm trying to prepare for the worst. I have an 08 GT that was given to me by a relative that won it in an auction but the car only came with one of those credit card styled key. I wanted to get another one and asked the dealer but they wanted $300 for parts/labor. I looked around eBay and found some used credit card styled keys going to far less than what the dealer wanted and was wondering if I could just purchase a used key and go to the dealership for programming. I asked the dealer over the phone, but he told me that people tried it in the past and it sometime didn't work because the FCC ID didn't match with the vehicle and such and that the safest thing to do is to buy it from him and get it programmed there.
I was wondering if anyone had any luck purchasing a used smart key and bringing it to the dealership to get it programmed, whether the key came from a CX or JDM rx8 of a different year.

One thing I did when I lost one of mine was to order extra valet key.

Parts guy sold to me for $54, and then, the service guy wanted some more to program it.

I said nobody told me about programing, and they let it go.

I purchased one on ebay and had the dealer program with no problems, just make sure you get one with the same fcc number.

Awesome. As far as FCC, to my research it seems like BGBX1T458SKE11A01 is the only one for the 3-button Smart Key for the 08 RX8s.

That is the same FCC ID that are on mine. However my 08 has four buttons not three.
