oil/Maintainance/Newbie

Yoooodawwwgggg.

I just purchased a RX-8 '06 with 70k miles on it. Its my first performance car and I would like to know what to expect and what I should be doing to this beast to keep it at tip top shape.

Last service was on Feb. 22, 2014 @67k miles. Everyone checkout green as well as spark plugs/coilers/oil change from the dealership.

I am prepping myself with things to purchase for this car as well as when I should be looking into my next full service.

I've been reading up on the oil topic and how **** the rx-8 club has been getting so lets just cut the **** and make this simple(hopefully).

When should I full service the car from here on out? @every 15k?

I LIVE IN CALI, so would Royal Purps or Castrol 10w40 be used?

Another thing is, people say it's good to do a oil premix with my gas, how often, which kind, and how much should I use?

Any other tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Million thanks in advance and I dearly hope this thread doesn't over heat.

Also, she will be my daily so I really hope to keep her 100 at all times (:

Welcome, Hash. No worries about the thread overheating. This is the new member forum, officially designated as a DMZ.

For service, there really isn't a "full service" interval like dealers try to con you into. Follow the item-by-item schedule in the owner's manual, but with a couple of enhancements.

- Change engine oil every 3000 miles. You'd be way better off using Castrol rather than Royal Purple.

- Replace coils every 30,000 miles, or step up to the BHR kit.

Premix is done every tankful of gas. If you explore this site, you'll find good discussion on what brand(s) to use, how much, and how people manage/measure/mix their premix. I don't premix myself (limits to my **** side) so any specifics I give you would be second hand.

My reccomendation would be to do a search on the SOHN tank kit and install that, then, switch to whatever brand you personally like Mobil 1, royal purple, castrol at 10W40. (Sohn tank will let u use full synthetic without injecting it into the chamber, then u fill that sohn tank with 2 cycle oil.)

Personally if i run out of idemitsu premix i use lucas 2-cycle semi-synthetic (for premix), found at O'Reilly auto. And i blend 20W50 with 10W30 in equal parts to get 15W40. And about 6-8 oz of idemitsu in my gas tank every fill. And my sohn adaptor tank with idemitsu only (always keep one handy while i order more).

It might not be a bad idea to do simple things like oil changes at the local dealer. That way you can start developing a relationship with the service manager(s). If you have any sort of warranty left, you want to be on their good side. Easiest way to do that is by having them do your oil changes.

In regards to premixing, there is no direct correlation between premixing and engine longevity. Theoretically you can assume that better lubrication inside combustion chambers should make your engine last longer. However, there's a million variables that affect rotary engine life. And NOBODY can claim with any degree of certainty that their engine lasted longer because of premixing, or that it died young because of lack of it.

Faithfully premixed engines have died young, and non-premixed generally neglected engines have lasted a long time. So go figure.....
