Oil Fill - Topping Off Without Funnel ?

I am aware of the need for a long funnel in my 2004 when adding oil, to keep it from running into the vent hose. But I was wondering about when I top off. I keep a quart in the trunk, if I check and am a half quart down or less, I pour from the bottle to top it off. Am I taking a chance on it running into the hose? Visually it doesn't appear like it can head that way but made me wonder.

I know the obvious answer is to just use a funnel all the time, but it's messy to keep a funnel in the car and I like being able to keep the level full anywhere I am.

Never used a funnel with mine.
Just pour slowly and it won't be a problem.

If you're feeling extra paranoid, pop the hose off the oil filler neck.

You got nothing to worry about. Just don't overfill the oil, that's the trick. Otherwise you will have a bit of a mess to clean up...

Gallon freezer ziplock bags work wonders nasty funnels. Harbor freight funnels and bags come out to cents each so I have one for each car

Good suggestion, but I try to keep anything with oil dripping on it out of my vehicles. I premix in my diesel trucks, keep pre-mixed containers that can just pour in the tank, and am doing the same in the 8. Oil just has a way of finding an opening and getting on everything!

You could keep the funnel in a plastic bag and use the clip for the tire inflator to hold both the oil and the funnel. That's what I do anyways.

Here's what I do - I cut open the orifice side of a 5L oil bottle - cleaned it out - and attached this to the tool kit strap. in that bottle I keep a 1 qt bottle of 5W30, bottom of bottle has 10 paper towels to soak up any mess, funnel, small half-used roll of paper towels, and my 0.5L of delicious and nutritious 2-stroke liquid gold (currently using Mystik JT4 Sea Und Snow JASO-FD). Whenever I need to fill up the oil, I use the WalMart $4 funnel, clean it up with a paper towel, and stuff a clean 1/2 towel into the top and bottom of the funnel and place back upright in the 5L bottle in the trunk.

Wannawankel, very clever!

Right now I have a rectangular plastic container, no cover, and in that keep a quart of motor oil, a few quart oil bottles that each have 8 oz. of Idemitsu premix, and a few paper towels. Yes it's oil related stuff, but I keep it clean. I'll get some 8 oz. containers at some point to replace the partially filled quarts.
