Oil consumption

In Rx discussion an older post popped up. One guy said he usually burns 2/3 quart every 240 miles. Someone chimed in and said it's excessive and he burns a quart every 600 miles. That seems excessive to me as I burn 1/2 quart every 1500 miles. I do premix with Idemitsu. What should be the average oil consumption? I read from another site that 1/2 quart for 1500 miles was normal. Everybody has a different story. Just curious what you guys are burning.

Why aren’t you posting in that thread rather than this starting another new thread on an old topic in the new member area crap again?

Does George Soros pay you to intentionally cause chaos here?

He pays me to annoy you.

Do me a favor as I've asked in the past. Stop responding to my posts. You spend too much time and energy trying to be the RX8 police.

Kinda with TeamRX8 no need to post multiple threads about oil of all things. To answer your question though, I add maybe a half quart every 500 miles.

Is 1/2 quart for 1500 miles too little?

FYI... The reason I started a new post is because it has been my experience I get fewer responses when people see an old post that has been ressurected.

It depends on how hard you drive. If you're taking it easy , 1500 miles per half quart isn't crazy on stock programming. It's certainly on the low side though.

How precise is that half quart measurement?

Just to further clarify why I started a new thread, I believe the reason I get fewer responses from an older ressurected thread is that many times there are dozens of posts that one would have to read through to finally get to my question at the end of said thread. It apparently discourages members to have to read through all the posts to finally get to the newest post at the very end.

I tend to drive hard most of the time....you know....drive it like you just stole it. It is very precise. I usually fill it when it reaches the top dot which is 1/2 a quart. I usually only fill it once between 3000 mile oil changes. When I first got the car, from everything I was hearing, it seemed like I was not burning enough oil until I came across an article that said 1/2 quart per 1500 was normal. After reading the resurrected thread, I wanted to double check with you guys.

I would think that if you drive mostly highways, your consumption rate would still be low.

Also, just a guess here, but if the oil injection rate is tied to the MAF somehow... Maybe your altitude would have something to do with it? IIRC you live in Colorado, so maybe that has something to do with it. I can't say for sure, though.

Yeah that does seem low if you're getting on it. May want to premix as a precaution.

I quart lasts me about 2000km, mostly highway, driving normally. But my injection rate is increased.

I wasn't considering elevation in the equation. Most of my driving is highway as I can enjoy the car where she shines. Especially twisty mountain roads. And while I drive it hard, thet tends to be around town while going thru the gears and redlining once or twice a day although lately there are some days I don't redline but rather will sometimes shift at 6 - 7k rpms.

And yes I do premix.

When you say your injection rate is increased, are you referring to the update Mazda does? If not, is it difficult to do your.self?

I believe this is all doable through Cobb access port. Its not difficult but that tool is expensive.

yes you can increase it with a cobb ap but they are no longer supported or sold for an rx8. it really sucks they wont even reflash the one i have to factory specs, it was married to my old car which was totalled by a deer so the cobb i have at home is a paper weight

Ahhh see, you learn something new every day. Other than Cobb I have no idea how you adjust something like that. My car definitely had a tune done before I bought it. Runs like a dream even though when I bought it, it wouldn't start.

Compression: 7.5, 7.5, 7.1 front, 7.0, 7.1, 7.0 rear corrected for 250 RPM and elevation on a warmed engine. Just tested last Sunday. 70,000 miles.

I have read in older posts that the reflash actually caused owners to experience burning less oil than prior to the update. Mine was done before I bought the car. Iam wondering if the update is the reason I only burn 1/2 quart per 1500 miles.

The other thing is some owners who premix have noticed their oil level increasing. I'm not sure how to explain that, but it's more than one or two users. So you might be consuming just fine, but some of the premix is finding its way to the oil pan.

OP, The ECU meters oil injection via an algorithm. As you can see from the two pertinent M/E tables below ...metering increases as load, rpm, & throttle position increase.

This makes more sense. I drive my car really hard a lot of the time so it comes to reason that I need to add so much oil. Never seen this graph before, it's going in my scrapbook.

I don't push my 2004 RX as hard as many, 1/2 highway, 1/2 local. I add about 1/2 quart every 1000 miles. Just use one of your trip odometers to track when you last added and keep an eye on it.
