MD Oil Catch Cans: Vented or non-vented?

I am currently in the process of changing out my existing catch can. Some have told me to mount the optional breather filter, others have said the exact opposite? Meaning install the new catch can, leaving the breather filter off and the catch can sealed; because putting the breather filter on may cause vacuum issues.

What is best for a rotary? Mine is a 2008 RX-8 (NA Motor). Have you found adding the provided breather filter to the catch can helps, or, is it better to leave it plugged with the catch can sealed?
