FL noise from transmission 04 rx8

Anyone have information that might help me figure out/fix what caused loud whining noise from auto trans and loss of gears after driving short distance if i let car sit for a few moments gears are working fine and noise is still there. seen it talked about but have yet to find info on what steps i can take before replacing transmission. yes fluid is full and using what is stated on parts house comp. It just started today and I am not experienced with Mazda Rx8, it is my daughters car. I really like the car and really want to work on what I can myself do enjoy tinkering with vehicles. . Fiddled with vehicles my whole life. If anybody could point in right direction for resolving issue or any Info I would be thankful. I will be changing fluid , other maintenance as well.for now looking for any Info anyone may have to share
Purchased car couple months ago 2004 Mazda RX8 4sp automatic trans.
Again thanks ahead of time.

This might not be what you want to hear, but the automatic early RX8s are the least powerful, most problematic and expensive to repair versions of the car. Unless you're sure the engine is in good shape, you might be better off finding another RX8 than replacing the trans in this one.

Since you're new to the RX8 world, I suggest you take the time to read rx8help.com, Potential Owners section to orient what other things to keep an eye on.

With that out of the way, see if the whine is louder when the trans is in reverse. It may have a clogged filter/strainer, which is cheap/easy enough to fix if you get the trans oil pan off, see here: https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-f...filter-260106/
But there is a chance that the clog is a symptom of a bigger problem. One way to find out

If it's not that, I'd start looking for a replacement trans to save time and money.

There may be something in the transmission that may be damaged. Changing fluid and filter probably won't solve the issue but its worth a shot I suppose. You may need a new transmission to fix it properly.
