When I purchased my 04 rx8 the seller only had 1 key and fob for it.

After searching here for info and learning that I needed to visit a dealer for duplicate keys I called the 3 closest dealers and was quoted prices for cut and programmed transponder keys $100 to $150 for each programmed key.

When questioned as to why it was so high all dealers said they charged 1 hr shop time to program the key. Not liking that answer I proceeded to call a local locksmith who told me no problem.

Met him at a local business and 10 minutes later, I had 2 new transponder keys programmed and working everything for $100.

Lesson learned: Try the local small business owner before you give up extra hard earned money to the dealers.
