New to the site from FL

Just wanted to go ahead and introduce myself, I'm Scott from Fort Myers, FL. I've been a rotary fan as long as I can remember, just never took the plunge. I'm starting to consider a new (to me) car and the crazy low prices on used RX8's have been tough to ignore. I know these cars are quite unique, and not without their quirks, so I wanted to join up and do some research beforehand.

A little on me, I love small, light, agile cars. Started out as a Honda guy (prior CRX, Integra, S2000, RSX-S owner), before finding Miatas. My current daily driver is a 6sp G35 sedan, it's been a great dad car but it's a bit of a tank. I'd love something I could occasionally squeeze my daughter into, but still fun to throw into a turn or take to autocross.

I'm currently wrapping up a build on what should be a daily-driveable turbo 2000 SE miata. In the past reliability and gas mileage have kind of scared me away from the RX8. Now that I should have a solid backup car to drive, a shorter work commute, and with such low RX8 prices those concerns seem less significant. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and start digging around the place.

Welcome!

Read through this thread if you haven't already BEFORE you go shopping for your used RX8. Most importantly you will need to have a rotary-specific compression test done on the rotary engine BEFORE you buy. Otherwise your "bargain" can turn out to be a very expensive proposition if you need to replace or rebuild a rotary engine suffering from low compression.

Thanks for the advise. I've been reading up and trying not to get scared off.

From what I've read it sounds like most motors start to show symptoms before they just totally let go. Is that generally a correct observation? Hot start issues, misfires, CELs, etc usually give you a little heads up before a seal totally lets go?

That's a correct observation Scott. I have had one fail on me in my own driveway at idle with no indication that it was going to let go. Just the nature of the beast sometimes I suppose. I have two 8's and love them both, quirks and all. They are all around amazing cars!

++ ^^

My first one was killed, I bought a second. Love them both. I was tracking the first one, figured it was time to check out motor. Did not seem to have quite the umph as before. 5 out of 6 faces failed compression, 2 at 55 'ish PSI. Motor was worn completely out. Still started, hot and cold, still passed cars on the track.
