Hello, I'm a noob to the rotary engine and wanted advice on possibly putting a cold air intake on my 07. Is the RX8 cold air friendly? I do know metal intakes are pretty under the hood but I've been told plastic intakes are better. I don't know myself. Also I'd like a deeper exhaust tone. Any suggestions on the best exhaust systems for it? Excuse my noobism but again this is my first rotary. And yes I read the new to guide. Thanks

Intake: AEM and Racing Beat are the only ones to go to, and they will only pick up a couple HP at best. If you don't get one of them, stick with the stock intake. The stock intake is really very very good, and is already a "CAI".

Exhaust: Borla and Racing Beat are the two most popular catbacks on here, but the sound is all subjective so you are going to have to try to meet up with people with different exhaust setups to see what you like the most.

Someone just sent a pm stating that the AEM itself would help change the tonal quality from my exhaust itself and coupled with a good cat back system I should get the sound I'm after. Is this true?. Stoopid question I know but you have the knowledge that I don't here.

Consider a BHR midpipe if you are able to take your cat off.
I have one with stock exhaust and like the sound, plus the peace of mind knowing a clogged cat won't ruin my engine.

Yes, the intake can change the sound of the exhaust (by changing airflow into the engine it affects airflow out of the engine), but it is perhaps the smallest possible change of anything you could do.

As for "getting the sound you are after", that is something I wouldn't put much stake in. Text based communication does an exceedingly BAD job of defining what sounds pleasant to you. What that person hears might not even be the same thing you hear, due to how no humans are different and that includes ears.

The only way you will truely be able to find out what you want is to listen to combinations in person. Videos and the like still have signal loss, distortion, etc... that muddles the real thing. Someone trying to describe it in text ... it's got no hope. It might be close, but is it what you are really looking for? Only you can answer that when you actually hear it.

Thanks a ton. Actually hearing it in person would be my best bet. I've heard one with I think was a Magnaflow exhaust but it just sounded like a ticked off bumble bee to me. Have a close friend with one that has that good deep throaty tone to it. May find out what he went with. Thanks again.

Again thanks guys. Also on a second note I went with AEM CAI and BHR mid pipe. Also had coil replaced with BHR as some of the very knowledgeable members here suggested better coil life and fewer replacements ( lasting possibly longer than the 30k replacement. ) On a final note I try to redline my 07 at least once a drive as I've heard its good for the engine ( and because its fun ). On that note I'm curious if redlining it once a drive is OK after all? I've learned so much here from some very good and knowledgeable people and I'd like to take a moment to say thanks to each and every member who stepped in and set a newbie straight and took the time to actually help me instead of ignoring a noob. You guys are great and I feel honored to have gained more knowledge about a fun and exciting car.

Redlining the engine while in gear at full throttle doesn't hurt the engine. You don't want to lug the engine around low all the time, it's carbon chokes the engine. You don't want to redline all the time either, it will overheat it. The more you vary everything, the better.

Generally though, don't treat it as a clinical schedule of behavior when driving. Just have fun driving the car, don't be scared of the redline, and you will probably be driving it healthily.

By the way the capital Y was a slip of the finger and the exhaust cost double the price of the aftermarket I had installed on my Eclipse GT V6. Again members here were correct that even mild mods for the RX8 don't come cheap but the sound I now have was worth it. Thanks
