UK New Owner RX8

Dear All

I am a new owner of a 06 RX* 31k miles. I am a down grader, I have sold my pride and joy BMW M3 E46 SMG which was remapped, black alloys, black windows.. a pure beast.. a real drug dealer car..

unfortunately the M3 are very expensive and the SMG gearbox and clutch wasn't going to last imo. so I sucked it up and traded it in for a Mint condition RX8. SO far the power difference is Huge. But its been 48 hours and Im really liking the RX8.. nippy when revs build up, handles really well, very light car and steering.

Im truly impressed, Since owning the car I have spent the best part of 5 hours reading this forum and have come to the conclusion that I have made a decent decision and will proudly become one of your members.

I thought I would be saving fuel with the REX but clearly the rotary likes to work double time so my straight 6 was swapped for a Rotary saving me nothing on fuel..

I am going to clean the MAF sensor tomorrow and fingers cross will cure the irregular idle. Car had been sitting unsold for quite some time. was disappointed to hear there are no significant modifications. But over time I will get the straight including manifold, forced intakes, coils, plugs and a map. that's all you can do as far I have read.

Will be keen to explore the turbo but if no one recommends that for reliability perhaps I wont waste the money.

It was a purchased for a reliable A to B car. but couldn't let the black alloys go, so this car has black alloys, lowered and black windows, so a baby brother to my M3.

If anyone feels they would like to share with me some clear instructions for MAF refurbishment with contact spray please feel free.

Thank you for your time and do I hope I haven't bored anyone with my M3 break up

MAF cleaning is pretty easy. Contact cleaner from local auto parts. Unscrew the maf from the intake observe quality of sensor, spray a couple sprays in the sensor housing, watch it air dry. Reinstall. However idle can be caused by a couple of things.

Ok that's cool will get that sorted tomorrow. regarding the irregular idle what are the common reasons, the garage seems to think it is caused by flat battery and not being driven for quite some time, making ECU irregular and needs to recalibrate. Clearly I would have adjusted the idle but these cars are map dependant.

Will update on the MAF clean. If successful will ask about for a rotary independent who would build up a turbo kit and pipes all in a package, rather than me purchasing parts online for extortion... are second hand turbo kits safe for reuse?

Like I stated, Idle can be caused by more then just the MAF. Try trouble shooting if that doesn't fix the issue. Search the word idle and you'll run into a bunch of threads dealing with symptoms and causes, I forgot to mention anytime you alter anything performance wise on this vehicle you have to learn how to reset everything and also give it time, which means a couple of drive cycles to relearn things. To my understanding some 8s differ on how long or how fast it takes to relearn everything. Lastly, I suggest making sure everything is in decent to good condition before you jump into a turbo install.

Rough idle can be caused by quite a few things, including: MAF dirty, ESS dirty, vacuum leak, front O2 sensor failure, compression loss, fouled/failed plugs, failing coils, failing wires, engine grounding problem, no fuel trims developed (happens after a dead/disconnected battery).

Do your research about turbocharging first. These engines don't take kindly to it at all, and doing it properly gets VERY expensive ($10k USD is the starting budget we recommend). Even the smallest shortcut or flaw in software, hardware, or wiring and your motor gets turned into a paperweight before you can blink. Even if everything is right, the lifespan of the engine is noticeably shortened. If the 8 is your primary car, this is really not recommended at all.

Thank you to both comments, Have looked into the turbo and my car would be reliable but I have contact a Rotary UK specialist and the cost of set up even with refurbished parts, is within my budget.. The downside is the engine rebuilds post Turbo, every 10k miles I have been told is most before a rebuild, the cost of these rebuilds are not cheap as you all know, so I feel I will decline my comments regarding the turbo as rebuilds would be to pricey for a mere mortal with a family

I must say this forum is excellent, the posts are so helpful.
