New owner here with a few interesting questions

Hey fellas,I purchased my winning blue 2004 AT (i know, its the only car they had that was worth a damn and i needed a car) a couple of months back and have been researching every single bit of information i can find about this car, its maintenace history, how to maintain the car, and deciding what i want to do as far as mods,(reliability and performance).

Once I got the car,I called the mazda dealership and had them run the VIN.The woman i spoke with told me that the engine was replaced in 06 and a flash was done along with a few other things (which leads me to belive that my 130,000 mile car only really has about half that).

Heres the thing that im wondering...

The lady told me that I had a second generation engine in my car which is confusing because I thought the Renesis II was in 09 and higher and that many things from the two series were not compatible.

Also if its not a second gen is it a new engine that was installed or a remanufactured one?

By the way I love this car! it is truly a drivers vehicle. I got my first car when i was 17 my dad helped me get a black RX7 turbo II MT for $500. (man if i knew then what i knew now). Ive been driving 90s sporty MT cars every since then and no other car has been anywhere near the great experiences Ive had with the Rx7 and Rx8.

Thank you rotary gods for your pittance!

The lady on the phone is mistaken, ignore the "second generation" reference. You are correct, no dealer would put the time and money figuring out how to get the series 2 engine swapped in, all the hardware linked up, all the electronics replaced, etc...

You have to get that info from MNAO, it's vin specific. If there were any open recalls on that vin when the car was in, they should have been done at the same time. Otherwise, recalls would have been done before, or if any recalls were issued after, depends on if the owner brought it in.

I'm not sure what info you think we would have on your specific car

(There were 7 RX-8 recalls btw, with most of them only affecting a specific vin range, like the most recent was an airbag recall that only affected two US spec RX-8s)

Welcome,

For that vintage, the same one I have, the items in the two threads below are very helpful. One is a reading assignment, the other is a set of easy mods that are very helpful on the early cars.

And, Welcome.

Engine replacement and new flash in '06...possibly as a recall? That would have been 4206f. Most engines that flunked the recall test were replaced with rebuilts, not new. The flash fixed most of the earlier flash-related problems, so your engine never suffered under an early bad programming. There was one more flash update (MSP16?). Worth seeing if that was done. It's still a freebie if it hasn't.

The details of the 4206f recall, including owner and dealer letters, should be in a sticky on this site. Entertaining reading. Talk of "white glove" treatment for the owners.

Congrats on the ride. Definitely a blast.
