New noise from engine bay

I recently made two long-ish trips in my 8 (3 and 4 hours each). After the first trip I had an unnerving noise coming from my engine bay but no noticeable change in performance. The noise would decrease each time I drove it after that and eventually went away. However, the noise came back after the second trip last week. Sounds like a smooth grinding and intermittent squeal. What is this nonsense?

They seem fine. No slipping or squealing. All pulleys rotating normally as far as I can tell.

No noticeable play in the pulleys while engine running or while off. Maybe a worn/dying bearing somewhere along the line? Couldn’t post video to this forum but did on Reddit /RX8 with Username: dntjstdnt

I would pull the belts off and check the idler pulley the water pump and the alternator. If there isn't any play I would change the belts ( cause they are off... and cheap) and see if the noise recurs.

I have seen a lot of older belts that make noise when they are hard... that goes away when you replace them

Hmm. OK, it's harder to tell from the video because I can't tell the direction of the sound and it's not something familiar. I'm still leaning toward idler bearing or AC clutch. Try this, to localize the part making the noise:

Take a stick of wood like a 2x4 and place one end to your ear and the other to the alternator, AC compressor, parts of the block near the idler if you can get in there. When the stick touches the part that's making the sound, you'll hear it clearly through the stick.

Be super careful around moving belts, they can whip that stick around with significant force.

Thanks for the suggestion. Where should I forward the bill for my hospitalization?

It's a pretty classic if old school way to narrow down what part is making a noise.
If it's too daunting to try to avoid the moving parts, you're welcome to pay a mechanic to do the same.

Without any intervention the noise has once again stopped. I guess we’ll see how long it is until it pops up again.
