New member, soon to buy

Been lurking these forums, rx7club, and other random sites for a while now, but I think I'm finally about to take the plunge and purchase an RX-8. It will be the first car I buy that I legitimately want and not what was just affordable.

I have one in mind at the moment. It's an '04 with a recently replaced engine that comes with Mazda warranty. It has an upgraded starter that comes with the newer models, a K&N air filter, and a "racing pipe to replace the cat". I know RX8 can be tricky with what mods are installed, and I don't think the air filter is anything to be worried about, but the pipe concerns me a little. I haven't been able to form a conclusion on my own whether or not that's acceptable.

I've printed off the questions from the potential owner thread and when I go see the seller tomorrow I'll ask and reply with the answers. Hopefully if there's any red flags someone can point them out for me.

Even if this car doesn't work out, my mind is pretty much made up that my next car will be an RX-8, just have to find the right one. Looking forward to joining the rotary club.

Reverse that opinion. A catless midpipe is a benefit to reliability and power, although not kosher with emissions regulations or your significant other's nose. The K&N filter though, yeah, that can cost you your engine since it doesn't filter good enough, to the point that it can indeed let sand sized particles into your engine. Stock is better.

Thanks for that info, somehow I missed that whole discussion before in my general browsing. Searching just K&N lead to quite a few results.

The car wasn't a slam dunk, but I can't rule it out just yet either. The seller is going to get back to me on a few points.

If he as a Mazda warranty, he may still have a good cat and the stock filter box unless he sold them.
If you need a cat for inspection in your area, that would be an extra expense for you.
I would ask about those, and if he doesn't have them, use that info to try to negotiate a lower price.

That car didn't work out, and it took me a little longer but I found a great deal. Got an '04 with everything I was looking for. It's got a small blemish on the front lip, the coils need to be changed, and the tail light gasket needs to be fixed. Everything else checked out though.

Just drove it home today, and I'm still in a bit of disbelief that it's sitting outside. If it's not against the rules I have an AutoCheck account for a bit longer if anyone needs help with some VIN numbers. Just send me a PM.
