New to 8s frustrating problem
I'm having a problem with my newly acquired 05 Rx-8 where the car wont rev past 2k rpm. started with the radio display freaking out so i disconnected the battery to try and clear and reset the problem. when i reconnected the problem really started. since then i have checked and replaced coils, wires, plugs, fuses. my #2 coil was dead so i replaced it and the car ran fantastic until i turned the key off, then back to nothing over 2k rpm. ill post a video if that helps at all. any suggestions?

i haven't had access to a ODb2 scanner so i cant check them but no engine light on or anything. i need to go buy a scanner i guess but its going to have to wait nearly a month till i can afford it.

You can get a very basic bluetooth OBD dongle that works with your smartphone for like $20 on ebay. But if the light is not on, then there are no codes. If you do get a scanner/dongle, you can monitor the various sensors to try to determine what the engine is doing when it gets to 2k.
Can you describe how the display was freaking out? That points to an electrical issue. Are there any other symptoms?

the radio display was cycling through every possible number just constant cycle i replaced the battery and terminals as well to remove those as problems. the only light its giving me is my traction control light flashing at startup.

Does the light flash at every start-up or just the first after disconnecting the battery?
When starting the car after reconnecting the battery, you want to turn the wheel full left then full right to calibrate the electric steering -- which is what's causing the flashing light. But usually, even if you don't do that, it shouldn't flash on subsequent start-ups. If it's doing that, either there's an interruption in the power supply from the battery that resets the car, or something more weird.

Yes, take it to an authorized Mazda mechanic and save yourself a lot of time, frustration, guessing and throwing away money replacing parts that may well have nothing to do with the problem.

if i could afford mechanics rates i would trust me, i borrowed a scanner from a friend im going to check it in the morning ill post my results thanks again to all those who helped nice to see a good community.

OP here had to make another account FB login wasnt working. the code ended up being a P2103 anyone know off the top of there heads what that exactly is so i can get her back on the road? thanks again.

it just doesnt get to 2k like it bogs out like the computer is limiting the power to that point other wise it runs really smooth since i changed the coils

P2103 Throttle Control Motor Relay Circuit Short | AutoCodes
Throttle control motor circuit short? I've never seen that before. Sounds like you need to examine your throttle body and wiring around it.

I agree, maybe just a simple cleaning of the connections might do the trick!

yup so im an idiot! spent about 200 bucks in the last few days replacing things and all it was is a loose connector to the throttle body. thank you guys so much would have never even thought about that unless you wouldn't have helped. letting it idle now and then im heading up the road to really test it. Cool. That was the question. Error code set, no CEL.
Is the car happy?
I am not sure why those are done that way, but there are codes that are set that do not turn on the CEL.
I hope it worked out. I may need a hand with an 87 GXL I just bought and am just over in Oviedo. It has only run for 2 hours in the past 10 years.
As for wasting $200, likely you did not waste much. The things you did are recommended for any "new to you" RX8. Check out the threads in my signature for a few more. They are a bit cheaper.

Update
i did a through cleaning of the throttle body and connectors today pulled the mass airflow on the intake as well to take a look at it but looks fairly clean. haven't had any luck with it still sitting in limp mode even though it idles really well. going to buy a scanner friday i guess and see if theres any other codes besides that one.

The radio display spazing out is a fairly commin problem. Happened to me also. It is fixed by simply pushing in on the black plastic facia below the hazard button. Just lightly press in a few random spots and I bet it stops.

i finally replaced the throttle body today and the car is still not fixed as of now still kicking the same code, p2103, going to have to check the voltage at the plug with a meter and start back tracing grounds i guess. never had one of these cars so not sure where the factory grounds are at. i can see the 2 on the fenders but not much else. would grounding the throttle body directly end this nightmare do you think?
forgive my ignorance but it this the alt ground?
