So I just bought an 04 rx8 automatic transmission with 68,000 miles I love it but it worries me bc I'm new to rotaries. My question is that as I drive the car down the road hard it does fine ( takes a little to get to 20 but after that she hauls tail) but as I let off the gas to slow down it kind of jerks as if it's shifting really hard but multiple times, is this normal?

 

Sounds like you are having transmission issues. You should get someone to check for codes and diagnose it properly

 

Ok it's weird it feels as if it's downshifting twice but stills drives fine. But I initially thought I had transmission issues bc when I put it in reverse it vibrates alot

 

That transmission sounds like an unhappy panda. Any records on when fluids were flushed/changed?

I see a fluid change in your future. It is not easy on these unless you can get the car up a bit and have a really big pan.

Unless the fluid has been changed, you are running on 13 year old trans fluid. Nothing lasts that long. Find a reputable shop in the area and get it changed. Then go back in about 4 months and get it changed again. This process is more gentle than the flush process IMHO.
