Need Help High Milage Series II
Hi guys,
I've found a great deal on a series 2. 2009 GT but the mileage is at +200,000km (+125,000 miles). I haven't met with him yet but owner says the engine is still in great working condition. It's obviously past its warranty so I'm guessing it'll need a new engine soon? I will get a compression test done if I decide to look more into it but I'd like your opinions on how the series 2 engines are compared to the series 1s? And if it comes down to it how much do I need to set aside to pay for a full engine rebuild or a new engine in Canada? ANY opinions are welcome.
Thanks.

First question that comes to mind is "does it have to be a series 2?"
Next question is "How much is the seller asking?"
The biggie, though, is "what sort of budget do you have for this enterprise?"
The upshoot of this line of questioning is that there are a lot of 8's out there with far better mileage on them including a series 1 I know of that has only 79.000 km on it and 2 others with less than 150,000 km on each.

It could be anywhere in its lifetime really. Maintenance is a huge unknown. My recommendation would be to be prepared for a replacement in about 30,000 - 50,000 miles. The series 2 should theoretically last longer than the series 1 engines. Forum consensus is a bit of an unknown for series 2 engines beyond 100,000 miles because they are so new.
A compression check at the very least will give you some idea on the life left in the engine. Rust may be a large issue too. I'm at only 68,000 miles (5 winters) and my camber/toe bolt bonded to the control arm bushing. Little big things go wrong with high mileage, so be prepared for some higher maintenance costs too.
Unless the deal is super good, I would just shoot for something with lower mileage. However, you should decide if its right for you. Remember when you ask something like this on a forum many judgments and assumptions are made, so do not take our opinions too seriously.

Life After 8K RPM....
I remember seeing the advertisement for the car in question.
Seller is asking maybe $12k its an 09 with 200k kms on it.Appears to be in good condition, but not loaded if i remember correctly; its got cloth interior.
As for the high mileage. I have an 04 with 255k kms on it now, 243k on the current motor :-)
rusted yes, stuff goes wrong here and there yes, hopefully S2 will be better. Just get the compression test and test drive the hell out of her to see how she responds :-)

Hmmm...!2k for a car with 200,000 + on it, as I see it, isn't much of a deal. Hell, I know of cars with less than 100,000 on them for a lot less than that. Granted, they are series one's but all are loaded GT's and are safetied and e-tested as part of the price. If that is, indeed, the car, I would think a better search would be in order unless there is something really special about it (like a suitcase full of cash in the trunk)
