Hi,

I was looking into buying a 2005 RX-8 over the next few days. It's currently got 95,000kms on it. A compression test will be done before I purchase it along with the other recommendations on RX8club. Thanks a lot, this website is amazing!

However, in case something does go wrong, I was looking into purchasing AA's Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (AA Mechanical Breakdown Insurance Online Quotes | AA New Zealand) and wanted to know if the list of components insured miss out on any key failing points on a car like the RX8. I looked through this post myself (https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-f...causes-249529/), but found it difficult to understand some stuff due to a lack of knowledge.

I know the post is long, and I'm sorry for that, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

List of insured components:

Engine – ancillary shaft, balance shafts, cambelt, camshaft, camshaft followers, connecting rods & pins, cylinder block, cylinder head, cylinder head gasket, cylinder liners, crankshaft, distributor drive gear, distributor drive shaft, fly wheel and ring gear, hydraulic tappets, manifolds, oil filter housing, oil pressure relief valve, oil pump, pistons and rings, pulleys, push rods & tappets, shell bearings & internal bushes, timing belt tensioner, timing chain tensioner, timing gears & chain, rocker shafts, valves & guides, valve seat inserts, valve springs.

Manual Transmission – casing and all internal components.

Might want to clarify in writing what happens in the case of a rotary which has virtually none of the parts listed in the engine section.

I wouldn't really worry so much about mechanical warranty, both my rx8s 04 and 06 have been very reliable to me.
Make sure the engine and catylyst converter are healthy .

How much would the mechanical insurance cost you?

I am not sure about in your country but I had an extended warranty (Federal was the name of the company) for this type of stuff on my RX-8 and it covered a few thousand dollars worth of parts plus dealer labor when my alternator overcharged and ruined my ABS modulator, battery, interior lights, window switch, etc.

It also paid for new coils and plugs twice when I was getting a Mazda reman installed under the extended warranty on the engine. It paid for itself and then some.

Thanks for the quick reply guys! I'll be sure to get something in writing before I get the insurance.

I'm getting it off my Uncle, who's owned it since it was imported into New Zealand. He's selling it to me for $3,500 NZD which is really quite cheap as he's maintained it well according to the pre-inspection and what he's shown me. It costs $1,000 NZD for three years worth of mechanical insurance. Thought I would get it for peace of mind and in case I ever want to sell it.

Would hate to be in the same situation as 9krpmrx8 without insurance...

You have made a very good list, man. I say so, because I have heard a lot of times the question - "Will the insurance company cover my crash test" OF COURSE IT WON'T. It's normal, that no insurance company won't pay for your crash tests. For example, do you use an insurance company? If so, then you will have to repair your car, if it's damaged by somebody, but it doesn't mean, that you can break it and insurance company will give you the new car. For example, when I got into an accident my car was broken, nothing grave, but the engine stopped working, but my cheap traders insurance took my car in their own auto repair shop (could you imagine, they have their own auto repair shop) and looked for spare parts for my car and even replaced the engine, and as a result, they made me a discount of 65%, and it took only 3 days.
