Mazda rx8

Hi I recently brought a 2006 Mazda rx8 automatic. When I first got it, it took about 10 sec or more to start . I was driving one day and I was comin to a stop because I was comin up to Red light and it cut off and wouldn’t start. So then I changed spark plugs and battery and it started but it’s smoking like hell out the exhaust and won’t stay running. any Ideas where I could start to get this thing back on the road ?

Was the engine compression tested before purchase (or ever)?
Ignition coils are a major point of failure, how old are they?
What colour is the smoke and does it go away once the car warms up?
Was the catalytic converter verified good?
Any OBD codes?

Shykeem,

... to start:
- Do you know something the car's history, E.g. previous owner, driving style, maintenance regimen, etc.?
- Did you see a compression test?
- 10s to start worse case...or routinely...cold AND hot? (a 10s crank time is...not good)
- How is your oil level?
- How is your coolant level?
- Did the car overheat...at all?
- What CELs are raised? Do you have an OBDII reader to read the specific code #s?
- Does the smoke from the exhaust have a sweet syrupy smell?

These cars require some attention...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you bought a car with a blown water seal. So blown engine. When it sits, the coolant seeps into the chambers, then when you start you get a smoke show until it burns off.
What does the previous owner have to say about this? Did it do this during the test drive? Was the car overheated at some point?

Not a heck of a lot of options, you need a new engine. You can get one from Mazda, or a rebuilder with a good reputation like RotaryResurrection, Pineapple Racing, Pettit Racing, etc. Depending where you're located, we can help find the nearest one.

Yikes! Very important to research a car before you buy it. How much did you pay for it? Putting a new engine in is very expensive. On top of anything else the car may need...
