Low oil pressure - white smoke coming from tail pipes

Low oil pressure - white smoke coming from tail pipes

Hi all,

im having a problem :/

I have just gone and got myself a rx8 !!

The he problem is it's started having loads of white smoke coming out the exhaust.

The way I've been combating it is there's a aftermarket oil presure sensor in the car when the cars driving at 70 mph the oil pressure is trading between 32 and 60

when its ideling or sat by its self for more than a second the oil pressure drops to between 6 and 13
and a big red light comes on that says oil pressure low
And smoke smoke smoke

if I hold the revs at a stand still the oil pressure comes back up to 32 and the smoke disappears

I have checked the oil that's a a good level and not overfilled

I have checked the collent and the level is fine to

I'm actually baffled?

Can am anyone help me out please ??

Im in gloucester uk if any of you guys live near by and no about the car I could really do with some help asap please and I don't mind paying for your time

White smoke is usually coolant, not oil. It sounds to me like you've got a bad coolant seal, which is a sign of a worn out engine that needs to be rebuilt. Although if it's going away when you increase RPM's, I'm not sure. I'd double check and see if it's really going away, or if it's just getting dissipated by an increase of combustion gas flow. How many miles are on it?

White smoke can be oil, when my turbo failed it was white smoke and when I had a failed coolant seal it was white smoke.

As for the oil pressures, fluctuating oil pressure at a set rpm is not good and the smoke is pretty much proof that you have bigger issues that need to be addressed.

If you are not losing coolant then it's likely not that, but you can pressure test the cooling system and/or send off an oil sample to blackstone to test for the presence of coolant.

Hi both

thank you for your reply I've found a specialist in the area so gonna drive it over to there Tuesday to get it looked at see what they say and hope and pray it's something small that they can fix if not then I guess it's gonna be a rebuild but it's a lesson learnt I guess about jumping in a car I don't fully understand 😂😂

Oil burning

Hi guys

I have now found out it's oil that's burning through the engine no coolent just oil ?

Where would I start to get this fixed ?

Main symptons - prices rufley?

If oil is exiting through the exhaust, and pressure is dropping, your engine's days are numbered. Sorry man.

Check your air filter and intake as well. If it's full of oil, what's happening is compression is getting past the seals and forcing oil up into the intake. The fix is rebuilding/replacing the engine.

Feeling a little bit gutted as I said it's a learning curve

but I have found that the engine was rebuilt about 14000 miles ago by a company called HME Rotary in Coventry in January 2016.

I cant find a website and there's no guarantee in the receipt I'm wondering if I should contact them and have a chat with them?

From what I've found online most companys offer a guarantee on engine rebuilds of around 2 years

Definitely get in touch. At least they can tell you how
it was rebuilt. If new big parts were used or somebody decided to cut corners.

Before you get too freaked out make sure that the pressure sender on the gauge is working correctly...they are a lot more likely to fail than the lubrication system on a stock RX-8 engine

Really low oil pressure at idle is likely a bearing issue. It is possible that the oil pressure regulator regulator is stuck open a bit or leaking...but they are not a very common failure as they are a super simple mechanism

Oil pressure should be about 50 psi @3000rpm on a warm engine with 5-20/30 oil

That's the recipt I have so my understanding is the customer gave them his old engine - they gave him a new reconditioned engine and fitted it himself

i have two gages one on the dash is constantly stuck at just over half then a aftermarket one that works correctly and reads out the pressure

l That's the paperwork I have I'm looking at it and thinking, the customer gave them the original engine, they then gave him a reconditioned engine and he fitted it himself

The OEM one is a pressure switch....so basically useless. The aftermarket one may or may not be giving you correct readings. Especially if it is an electronic gauge. Better to attach a mechanical gauge that is known good to check the readings before you assume you have low oil pressure.

i have plunged in my diognostics to the obd 2 port (only a cheep one of eBay) - but that's also showing that the oil pressure is correct on the after market gauge - also the spark when I'm of the revs shows at -3 when I'm of the accelerator

im not 100% with car data so I'm really out of my depths 😩

There is no oil pressure on the OBD2 diagnostics



What is your oi pressure at 3000rpms?

This is the reason that carmakers do not put functioning oil pressure gauges on cars.

Update

Hi guys

thought I would give you a update -

took it to rotery motion in chippingham - they found the compression is to low on the engine spark plugs covered in oil so basically the engine is F**KED 😩

So ive decided to push ahead and just get it replaced.

£1995 for the engine replacement with 2 years or 26000 miles warranty.

Have ve to wait until the end of the month to get the car back though due to funds on my part.

after I have it done I'm sure I will have a few more questions ectra
