loss of power pinging

loss of power pinging

Hi I need help here. Have had my series 1 for the past couple of months now. Was running great until a couple of days ago. No warning symbol and No fault code is shown. It cranks and starts fine and drives fine for a good distance, however after driving for a while (maybe when engine warms up), pressing the gas peddle emits a pinging/rattling noise and the car would lose power. By steadily maintaining the rpm below 2 the pinging noise is not heard. If i stop for even 20 mins. Its fine again until after a while then the pinging starts. This only when car is in motion, when idlin it does not do this. Would anyone advise what this is and what i need to replace? Does it have to do with the fuel delivery system, broken pump or worn filter? Im a bit lost when it comes to engines so would appreciate what i should look forward to when i take it to a shop.

I'd start with ignition. Coils, plugs and wires.

If that doesn't help look at cleaning the MAF Sensor. Also, check the Cat for clogging.

Just a guess, but trailing plugs/coils/wires.

yes it is on premium this is that is thats available down here..what are the implications Ken?

Premium is the right stuff to use. The first thing that comes to mind for pinging is too low an octane. Since it just started, it's possible you got a tank of bad gas. Did you fill up at a familiar place, or a cut-rate station?

i have 2-3 regular places i top up. Tank does not go below quarter tank. perhaps i should siphon everything out and clean the tank?

Kand and Harlan are probably putting you on a better track than I am. But if you suspect you got a tank of low octane gas, adding an octane booster would be easier than draining the tank.

Not knowing where you are to guage climate in your area, another possible culprit might be accumulated water in your tank caused by condensation if the humidity is high. One way to tell would be to get a ong piece of clear hose and , when the car has been sitting for an hour or so, gently slip the hose into the tank til you feel it touch bottom. Let is sit like that for a short while in case you stirred things up a bit inserting it. Once you are sure the tank contents have settled, start a siphon from the bottom by (ugh) sucking on the hose without moving it around and watch the fluid as it rises to see if it is proper gas-colored or more watery. I got water-laden gas once in a 5 liter Mustang I had and it ran like a piece of crap as the water mixed with the gas and couldn't burn right. Power dropped off and, under load, it sounded like a bag of hammers with all the rattles and pings.

Im south of the equator..... Tanzania. Will however follow your advice to see...thanks
