Looking to buy, but tranny problems

Ok, so here's the deal. I really want a white manual RX8, but in SoCal they're really really hard to find in my price range or with a clean title. Frustrating stuff.

Anyway, so I'm cruising ye olde interwebz when I come across an '05 white manual 8 w/ just under 100k on the clicker for $8.5k on the Marine base I'm stationed at. Guy is deployed, but his buddy is acting as a sales liaison of sorts. Exterior wise its not too shaby, no interior shots tho, but the kicker is that its stuck in 2nd gear. Local mechanic says clutch was installed good. Hasn't been moved from storage for a year( poor chap is deployed right now), flat tires, fluids haven't been changed, I don't even know if its been run in a year.

Million dollar question: Should I continue pursuing this beyond what I already have or not and, if I do, what should I look for, inspect, be possibly prepared for? I'm not looking for "read teh noobz pages", no offense. I already know to look for those things, I'm looking for specific things to look for in this given situation. I am a total novice when it comes to anything tranny related. Also, in your opinion what would be a fair price to pay for it?

That car is worth less than 4k. I just purchased an 05 90k for 6k, no problems at all, grand touring, leather, bose, sunroof.

I understand the price is way too high, I was already planning on only offering 5k-ish.

I'm wanting to know if anybody knowledgeable in this part thinks this would be a relatively easy fix or not. I may be a novice tranny guy, but I'm no stranger to turning a wrench if I can do it myself.

For $4k, if you do all your own work and the engine compression is good then yes, it should be fairly easy to address. I'd bet it's stuck in 2nd gear from a hydraulics or clutch pedal assembly problem. If you have to pay someone else to get it running, $3k is probably a bit much. If the engine compression is poor, $2k might be overpaying.

I'd honestly walk away.

Thanks RIWWP, that's kind of comment I was looking for. I will definitely take that into consideration. And I probably will end up walking away from it, in the end. Since the guy is deployed, idk why he craigslisted it unless he's already signed the title, I can't really get any information from him directly or test drive it or anything. And from the pictures I can't figure out where on base it's hiding at, so I can't go look at it while he's gone. Anyway, thanks for the experienced suggestions...
