looking to buy
Hey guys the name is Steve. I have been looking to buy an rx8 for about a month now, haven't found the right one just quite yet. I was hoping you guys could help me out with some info on things a should be looking out for when trying to buy one. Im looking for a 04-05 with prolly 90k+ miles on it. What are some problems that these cars are known for? Ive done some research and know that they typically have problems with the oil pressure light coming on. I don't know much about rotory engines and understand that they flood if you don't let your car idle for about 5 mins before and after driving. Anything else that I should be aware about please let me know, I've always liked rx8's and really am looking forward to finally getting into one. Thanks for the help!!

This cars can be very satisfying if maintained very meticulously. I just recently purchased a 05 rx8 a/t with 113k miles on it. And im loving every second of it. But there is a lot of things you need to be careful of like you said. You have to watch the oil level, the rotors will burn your oil a lot faster than pistons, always and only you conventional oil, never synthetic. Synthetic will leave a film on your rotors and kill the apex seals. Next would be the start and stop procedure. You never want to start your car to drive across the street to get groceries. If it must be done you should rev up to 3k rpms and hold it there for at least 10 sec. Other wise you can flood the engine. Next would have to be the gas consumption, dont let the 1.3 L engine fool you, this is a pure breed sports car and it will drink gas like a fish. with all of that being said it is very few thing you need to worry about to be behind the wheel of one of the most notable sports cars of this era. You can find a lot of info on youtube about this car as well. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Rotors-over-pistons
This thread must be navigated carefully......oil choices = a million threads on here, not even trying to start that back up. Revving to 3k from a cold start isn't a great idea, most people I've talked to on 8club say the same thing: turn it on, wait a few minutes as the engine warms up, then go.
stevo29, you're definitely on the right track as far as looking for potential issues ahead of time. I bought mine used, and the issues I went through had recalls or powertrain warranties: clutch pedal assembly snapped (recall, fixed for free), engine was suffering low compression (8-year, 100,000 powertrain warranty means the rebuild was free). Outside of that, check out the masterfully-assembled new owner's thread. Holy crap that thing answered questions I didn't know I'd have years after purchasing my 8. On RIWWP's last post, the "New and Potential Owners" thread is on his signature, click it, sit back and enjoy a great read.
