OP,

Clogged Cat is an issue, it can do a lot of harm. I suggest your first step, suggested here several times, is pull out the CAT and look at it. It is likely all garbaged up, or broken up, or both. Post a picture from the engine side. If it is a mess, the recommendation will likely be to break out the first element to get the exhaust flowing. Then, if the second element looks good, re-install it. You will still get the CEL, but it will not smell like a burning oil spill.

That is the first thing to do. Everything else is a waste of time if the CAT is plugged. And, this is something you can rectify by hitting it. Those are the best kind of mods. There is a DIY on gutting the cat out there.

I have some videos linked of my progress i am making an appointment this week to tow the car to a shop.... if you watch the videos you would notice the car came with an air filter that wasn't supposed to be there so i ordered an oem one and when it came in my dad tried installing it with out my permission and idk how but ended up snapping 2 hoses that sit just infront of the throttle and ate up the threads on my airbox where the maf sits so looks like more problems for me THANKS DAD ! But with the oem airbox and a new filter the idle hunt stopped but when warm it stays at about 600 rpms for idle and now instead of dying after 45 mins of driving it dies after 15 but only when i idle. while driving it seems pretty responsive but again im trying to take the baby into the shop this week come up with a diagnosis and a solution! Thanks for the support

 

Having open hoses after the MAF will do that... unmeter air is bad

If you haven't fixed it yet, you can put some plastic JB Weld type epoxy in the holes and redrill them.

 

That $5 **** from Home Depot? Really? your talking about my maf problem correct? Would it hold up in driving use i mean doesnt it get hot in there wont the heat effect anything? Ive used it on other applications but not for automobiles. And i was thinking possibly just grabbing a tap and die kit re threading the holes and using a thicker screw to match the new threads but wasnt sure if that would mess with the structural integrity of the plastic intake box or am i just kinda speaking out of my *** from exhaustion again ive been up for 3 days straight I apologize for any stupid remarks

 

Thanks everyone for the knowledge and help you guys are supplying me with plenty of useful information! Il be sure to keep posting my progress as i go and when the fix does happen il inform you on all of the causes ( not just one) and how i came about fixing them. Grabbing a car off an owner who doesn't appreciate it and trying to fix their stupid mistakes is a hard one but I believe it is possible and i plan on making it so

 

The air coming into the engine is not that hot.
The screws don't have to be real tight, just enough for the o-ring to make a seal.
They strip out easily.

 

Oh okay so the tap and die would work and so would your method if im not mistaken and il be sure to check all the seals too, get the most done before she hits the shop and they swallow all my money

 

++ ^^ Or, at a minimum, duct tape over the holes. It is enough of an air leak to screw up the idle,

And, check the cat if you can get under the car. That is one thing that can damage the engine.

 

Cat is deff clogged she was beat red after a drive when the concerns first came up i just dont wanna drop the cat mess up the gasket have my car sounding like machine guns and my neighbors calling the cops im moving soon and already dont have a good relationship with my neighbors id rather just let the professionals deal with that once the car gets in the shop but thanks for the insight I appreciate the attempt as of right now im just gunna fix the **** my dad broke

 

Understood.

You can drop the CAT without a lot of drama, just do not lose the gasket. The bolts should come out. Then you can see. If it is a mess, you can bust out the front media, with the thing still on the car, with a screw driver and a hammer. Just wear a mask and safety glasses. If you can see a nice, grey, unbroken rear media, just clean out the pieces, and hook her back up. If the rear one is a mess, get a longer screw driver, bust it out, and close it back up. You may have a leak, but not a bad one.

As for the stuff dad broke, I was not kidding about duct tape. There is really no vacuum there, just air that leaks in because it is easier than sucking through the air filter.

The reason I suggest this is that these do not cost anything, and may get you back in the game with a running car. You get to pick though.
