"Likes" etiquette question

I've never hung out on a forum that used "Likes", as this one does. What is the proper etiquette when you receive one? Should you thank the "Liker", or is it not expected? Is there any point to them beyond just the nice feeling of knowing someone liked what you said?

Hey Greasyman,

no real etiquette required to be honest.
it's nice to have someone 'like' your post but I don't feel it's necessary to thank them for it.
As for the point of it
