Ok so I've been driving since I was 12 I've raced cars for I don't even know how long "legally". I've owned a lifted s10 for a year now and I'm about to turn 17. My step dad had a rx8 and I drove it almost every day so I'm very comfortable with my driving abilities of the car. I've been saving money since I was 9 to get a car but I thought it was a good idea to have a cheap truck for my first car so I've had my truck for about a year. Now I'm wanting to move on to the rx8 since my step dad got rid of his. Is there anything in specific I need to know before purchasing and how is the insurance rates?

Don't act like I don't know how to drive I've been driving for 5 years and have experience behind the wheel of an rx8, so just be straight forward with me don't discriminate me because I'm 17 and all the money is mine in not getting any money from parents or family it's all my hard earned money.

I recommend getting a compression test for any rx8 before you purchase. As for insurance, you should ask around for a quote. Mine isn't that bad since they considered it to be a 4 door and is only 1.3L.

 

Another thing you might want to consider is operating costs. You mentioned saving since age 9 and are inquiring about insurance costs as though it makes the difference between affording to own the car and not. That raises the question of how much are you able to spend in a year on maintenance? Owning a rotary is not like other, piston-engine cars. Piston engines will run on damned near any fuel you care to feed it. Rotaries perform like crap on anything less than higher octane fuels (read: Super). Spark plugs for a piston engine sell for about 4 or 5 dollars each. Rotaries need laser iridium plugs at around $40. each. Ignition wires for piston engines: $20. to $50 a set. Rotary wire set $60 to $80. The list goes on and on.

Best thing you can do (fiscally speaking) is think long and hard before committing to a rotary purchase. Makes certain you are FULLY able to cope with the everyday expense of owning a rotary vehicle without sacrificing other aspects of your life like dating, night out with the boys etc. Too many people, both young and old, have gotten a rude awakening when they encountered their first rotary repair/service bill and they realized, too late, that rather than owning an 8, the 8 owned them.

 

Depending on what state/country you live in, insurance is gonna cost you $4,000 to $7,000 per year. Unfortunately, however good a driver you might be, 17 year old boys pay a huge premium for insurance. Not specifically on you, but on your peers.

 

coming from some of the highest insurance rates in the country here, my 8 is about 25 a month less than my 2010 Taurus. This is full coverage with state farm.

 

starting out it's going to be pretty high. i'm 33 and with Progressive, for my RX8 my insurance is $140, when i had 2 cars on my insurance before it was $150, full coverage. I also have the SnapShot plugged in so once my 6 months using it is done, if i'm driving as good as i think i am i can get up to 30% off my insurance.

 

Mine is $125 at age 25. Clean driving history so i get an accident free discount. I think your driving history is the biggest variable

 

I know geico is cheap. They see the 1.3L engine and 4 door car. I pay $487 for 6 months on my 8 2005 and my truck 2003 both full coverage and 2 drivers. My truck cost more on the insurance than my 8. Being 17 you pill pay an arm and a leg no matter what you drive.
