I'm about to do my first oil change on my 8 and am confused about the type to use I.e. Mineral or synthetic and as I don't even know what is in it now due to lack of history that's why I want to change it rather than top it up with the wrong stuff

From what I understand, as long as you are changing the oil at the correct intervals and topping it off every other fill up, you are good to go with any 5w20 or 5w30

As far as type and brand, you will get nothing but opinions

 

How often you change it (i.e. every 3,000) miles if far more important than what you use. Use whatever makes you comfortable, and keep it topped off.

 

Mineral oil, I suggest 5w30 for higher density. Mazda suggest 5w20 in north America especially for colder regions which is understandable if you get -10 Celsius and + in winter where u at, but summer time 5w20 is not thick enough IMO. Mazda suggest 5w30 in Japan, as an example ..
Make sure you top off oil level on a regular basis depending on your engine needs. And 3000 miles limit is recommended for oil change.
