Just got a massive repair estimate for my RX-8 from a Mazda Dealer repair shop. Seeking a reputable repair facility that does good work and won't cost me a arm and leg. Shops around Tampa and north Tampa preferred. I have steer issue, bad u-joints, and bad sensors (code P0661).

Please let me know of any shops or mechanics that can help. Also any parties to stay away from.

What are the steering issues that you're having? Is the power steering inop or in and out? You may have corrosion built up on the power steering sub harness. This is a common issue. I recommend removing the sub harness, cleaning the contacts on the harness and on the rack itself and performing a continuity test on each pin.

Is there play in the u-joints? These typically do not fail on the RX-8. Its really not a common failure point but it is possible.

As far as the fault code, you may have a faulty SSV solenoid or an issue with corrosion in the connector or a wiring issue. Either way not a terrible job.

 

Thanks for the reply verx7. I agree with your feedback. As for the steering, the Service Manager insisted that they checked the cables and put electrical decreased on the connections and the steering rack was bad. I don't agree with the assessment. They also recommend over $600 worth of additional services not asked for.

Can you recommend a shop or mechanic in the surrounding Tampa area?
