Hi my name is Cam. I recently traded in my car for a 2005 Mazda RX8. I have been obsessed with rotary engines since I was young. I finally have one! It runs great..just sometimes on warm starts it takes longer to start it.

Anyways, I just wanted to introduce my self you you all and I look forward to chatting with you in the future.

When you suggest an APEX seal replacement or and engine replacement?

Its running really well, except for those warm starts occasionally.

Due to warm start up probs....should I just get a new fuel pump, or have the engine looked at or replaced due to low compression?

 

Hi and welcome! As far as I can figure, your question entails whether and/or when to do a rebuild. As to that, the way to tell is to get a proper rotary compression test from the Mazda dealer or a reputable rotary rebuilder. That will indicate the health of the engine and whether or not you will require a rebuilt engine or rebuild.

Meanwhile, I would recommend reading the following repeatedly until it feels as though your eyes might explode. There is a LOT of useful information and tips within and might answer any other questions you may have.

I just bought a 2004 RX8 . this site will help you . Do a compression check that will tell you condition of engine ,,,

Does anyone know of any good replacement part installers in the Pacific Northwest? I can do a lot, but down the road, it may come down to engine or apex seal replacement, and I have no place or equipment for that type of endeavor.

Awesome, I scheduled a compression and diagnostic check for Wednesday. In the meantime, I was able to keep up on all the fluids and the fuse sensors. Finally the check Engine light went off and stayed off, but we'll see. I love this car and will do whatever I have to, to keep it going.

Well, I'm getting new sparkplugs, coils, catalytic converter, and exhaust system. Compression was good, and apparently the original owner put a new engine in, so the new one only has 52k. Not bad for a 2005. Looking forward to see how she drives and starts.

 

i also just recently purchased a 2004 mazda rx8 and I'm loving it. This is my first standard car so I'm still learning how to drive it. Any tips to make me better at driving a stick.

Hello!

Manual vehicles are the best. Especially with the sporty RX8. It gives you complete control of RPMs, speed, etc.

Just practice and you'll get really good at it. For the RX8, you need to make sure you press the accelerator and give it a lot of gas while you let off the clutch.

I've only driven manuals my whole life and the RX8 is so smooth when shifting, I love it. There isn't really a good technique. Everyone has there own. Just practice a bunch and you'll love it.

Today I got a tune-up, new coils, sparkplugs, catalytic converter and exhaust system. OMG it runs so good now. I love it. These cars are the best!!!!!! Enjoy! And glad to meet you!

 

Lucky you, I've done the ignition, getting a new cat/midpipe soon, and a new engine in a few months.

A friend of mine who works at the Mazda dealership when he found out I bought an 8 said ( Drive the **** out of it so it wont blow up ) LOL
It is a blast to redline it in second !!!

Hey EpikYummeh, Nice, lemme know how it feels with the new engine. It turns out mine only has 50k on it. They engine was replace with my previous owner at 25k. So that is awesome. I'm getting new shocks and struts this coming week so that will be nice.

 

Hey Bishop, yeah you are right! These Rotary Engines are meant for speed and power. They got to be revved up. So what I do everyday is this:
1. Start up: Warm up and rev up until the temp need moves
2. Drive good, but keep in low gears for a bit to keep the rpms high
3. During drive almost red-line at least once.
4. When stopping. Park. Rev engine to 2.5-3k for 10 seconds then turn off engine right away.

So far its worked amazingly. I feed her oil every 2 gas fillups, and keep the coolant on track.

 

That sounds complicated.

Do you rev the engine in neutral to heat it up? Just driving around in low gears (under 4k rpm) will get it to temperature faster. My coolant temp is usually up to ~70c by the time I'm out of the neighborhood. You can get rid of step 1 and not sacrifice longevity.

Redlining is great, but it's not 100% necessary every time you drive (it is fun though!)

Revving from idle to ~3k when parking is completely unnecessary, and makes you look silly to people who drive automagics. If your vehicle is in good health (and/or has one of the more recent Mazda flashes) you won't flood, especially when it's hot. Mine's never flooded even on sub 20ft trips starting from cold.

Checking the oil is a great thing to do though! I need to start doing it as often as you, lol.

Agree with Legot ^^ ..No need to rev and shut the car..

Also, don't rev up when you start from cold, just drive normally keep it under 4k rpm and accelerate moderately.

Yeah it runs great! I just put in a sway bar today, and tomorrow I'm getting the new shocks, struts, and front undercarriage. (mine is all tore up)LOL.
