Eccentric shaft slipped while replacing oil seal

I was using a handy guide on this forum to replace the e-shaft seal (damaged by an exploding serpinetine belt), and got to the point where I was putting everything back on, but this rotten key won't go back in, I've tried rotating it a little to see if it would help, but to no avail.

I'm guessing I have to take the front cover off.
-Clutch has been depressed the entire time
-braced the fly wheel

EDIT:
I just put the pulley back on to confirm a hunch.
The key is where it is supposed to be, shaft is not.

now what
