Smile Front Bumper Mashed Pretty Good! DIY Fix!

New Member here, thought id share a story and some pictures!

So about a month ago I struck a lady on my way home (legally was my fault as I struck her...but it wasn't my fault) the 2 vehicles on front of her were playing hooky as one guy was riding the other....so the guy in front decides to slam on the brakes causing the three vehicles behind (myself at the end) to do so as well and next thing I knew I was all up in this civic. So we pull off to the shoulder as the 2 ******** on front speed away... (I couldn't get a plate as I was behind the civic)....INFURIATING!!!!

I absolutely flipped my lid when the police officer told me he was gonna have to write me up for careless driving....and the lady I actually struck interjected saying "he wasn't speeding, he wasn't following to close...he struck me as a result of the idiots in front of me slamming on their brakes"...
so the cop hands me a ticket for following to close right after the woman told him I wasn't...I asked why following to close when she told you I wasn't, he said legally he had to give a ticket because I struck her....BOLOGNI! Gonna fight it tooth and nail!

But anyways, sorry about my rant....here's the damage and also the fix! I took the bumper off the car and actually just took a torch to inside of the bumper making long rapid passes so not to let one spot get hotter than any others... Soon enough i gently and slowly worked the mash right out. I am quite happy with the finished product, which by the way, is now my winter bumper. I have a fresh blue one at home ready to go on in the spring when I put on my summer tires. So this bumper will serve as a winter bumper!

THE DAMAGE......

Start to finish........

Finished Product.....

Before and After.......

All in all I think it turned out pretty good! It is definitely still noticeable in direct sunlight when she's all clean, but for the most part it is not really noticeable except for the cracks under the headlights, but again, now being my winter bumper im happy...Hope you enjoyed! O yea...Merry Christmas!

Ahh, yes. The old game the Ontario laws play with drivers' heads. Just so you don't feel too bad, under Ontario traffic laws, if you strike the car ahead and if it is stationary when you connect, it is an automatic charge of careless driving with following too close tacked on to (as my lawyer put it, so many years ago) offer you a loophole in the event you want to dispute the careless charge. Careless is pretty much an automatic license suspension but following to close is only 2 or 3 points off your license. His advice to me then was to plead guilty to following too close if the Crown attorney would drop the careless charge (which he agreed to). Hopefully for you, it still works that way. Better a couple of points than losing the license altogether.

It is unfortunate this happened to you, but, you were aware of the 2 fools "playing hooky" and did not take preventative measures to ensure a collision did not occur, the law is the law, suck it up and learn a lesson. Merry Xmas.

I only got the ticket for following to close, he didn't write me up for the careless driving....i have plead not guilty and have been informed there are a few ways in which to deal with it....one of my good family friends and x boss was a high level ranking officer and is my "advisor" so to speak, so we shall see what happens!

LOL, don't get me wrong I understand the law, I rear ended her, but as a direct result of someone else's actions...plus, there should have been some more investigation into the other drivers who left the scene, and BTW I did not know they were playing "hooky" until the woman told me after the fact...... but some common sense has to come in to play here.....I understand the law, but if I were to slam on my brakes because of a chipmunk or a frog and you were behind me and hit me as a result, you would be at fault! says the law, you hit me so your at fault....silliness IMO.

Big Fella, you took my rather harsh comment like a trooper, kudos to you. I understand common sense "should" come into play and I am a advocate for all vehicles to have dash cams which would for sure be in your favor as far as the cops go. Here in Croatia as well as back home in Australia, it is an offence to swerve or brake for an animal on the road resulting in an accident, who wants to injure an animal or damage ones vehicle, but then again, it beats having a head on with a semi. We can debate this for ever but the law almost always wins. Excellent repair job btw.

Avoiding an animal that darts out into the road is good practice for the time that it might be a child darting into the road.

Cheers Mate! Much Appreciated! im pretty happy with it, although in direct sunlight you can still see some marks left over from the collision...but will work just fine for my winter bumper! I will give it a buff in the spring when it warms up and that should help.

Cheers!
Merry Christmas!

haha no worries my friend, I didn't find your comment too harsh! and funny you should mention the dash cams as I had a conversation with one of my buddies not long ago about how sometime in the near future, cars will be built with dash cams auto integrated for that reason! it may also something to think about when I do my tablet install, modifying the nav housing to be able to record the road ahead when open.....
Anyways I hope you and yours had a merry Christmas!

Regards,
Dave

Thumbs up UPDATE - Unusual Letter Received

Hey Gang,

Just a little update....

I received a letter pertaining to my accident and my charge of following too close...

The letter i received stated that the prosecution unit had reviewed the files pertaining to the case and saw "no likelihood" of conviction and have thus decided to withdraw all charges!!

I have never heard of this happening before.....

The letter came as a shock to me, I'm not sure if something happened and something got screwed up but as of now i will no longer have to show up for court and all charges have been withdrawn!!

ill post a pic of the letter when i get a chance...

Big Fella
