Excellent club....great advise.....my luck sucks

Hi all.
I bought my rx8 in September.....drove it for a month then locked 'er up in the garage for the winter.
Had a blast on the odd snow-less dry roads on a few winter drives (above freezing out).....and then YAAAAAAY spring.
Long story shortened (cuz I am an old windbag lol) had the dreaded flashing CEL. Thanks to the people here, I used the shop scanner and ran through the computer resets (20 brake stomp, -cable unhook etc....) replaced coils, plugs wires and first o2 sensor, as well as gutting the plugged cat....it got so hot it actuall melted in spots..
The car was still running like crap....no power bad revving etc.....
Trailered it to Mazda yesterday, compression test says 0 on one rotor, all around, and 80 on the other (can't remember psi/kpa) translation is cooooooked motor.
I am less than happy
The car has service records from new to 27,000km from the original owner through Mazda and I bought it at 44,590km, immediately changed oil, filters, trans and diff fluids.
Premium dinosaur oil only BUT at 49,833km (200km on last oil change) motor is done.

I know Mazda has a 100,000km warranty here in Canada, and the dealership is working with me, but has anyone actually gotten a new motor from Mazda after buying their car used?

I freakin love this car, and wont know for a few days either way, but how screwed am I??
As it sits.....I now have 14,000 owing on a paperweight.
Granted its a sexy paperweight lmao.

Thoughts?

New or used in my experience has never affected the engine warranty.

I'm actually waiting to hear back on whether I am getting a new or reman. engine from Mazda Canada. Scarboro Mazda to be exact. I bought a white 05 8 with 100,000 km on it. Asked them to do a compression test and fix a few minor things before I committed to purchasing it. Got results back they were good and drove it off the lot at 8 30pm. Had some family check it out when I got home 10 minutes later, let it run for a bit, and then bam. Died at a stop sign lol. Took it in the next morning and they didn't do the compression test hot, so it's their fault and now I get a new engine with it. Lol. Mazda Canada seems to be pretty generous though, they're also covering some other parts to throw in with the engine so I guess I'm lucky in a way.

Very very few of us still are the original first owner's of their 8s, and many of us have had engine replacements.

So yes.

(though technically they are reman engines, not new. No new engines for the past 2 years or so)

It also has very little to do with luck, and everything about researching what you are about to buy before you buy it. Sadly, very few people actually research ahead of time. A cursory glance is typical, and this is the end result.

I may have gotten a new engine in my car. In 2005 my first engine had a low compression/warm start problem which required a replacement. One had to be shipped from Japan for my car. It didn't matter. That one went bad a year and 11,000 miles later.

I researched the 8 really well actually...44,000km on it when i got it.....went thriugh the car from one end to the other, called mazda with the vin number and got the history, eye on the oil all that.....i was just stupified how there was no warning or signs is all.....its looking like they will replace it as of 2hrs ago but they are still waiting to hear from Toronto.
I have another vehicle so im lucky in that aspect.....ive just been looking forward to a westward mountain run......thatll have to wait a bit longer i guess lol.

Well from experience. I did do research on these forums before buying. I am the 3rd owner of my 04 rx8. Anyways right before I bought it I had mechanics do a full 60 point check and tests... turned out previous owner trashed the hell out of the engine so he paid for the brand new engine from Mazda. Anyways engines go in the 8's fast or slow. Just depends I guess lol goodluck

I am the second owner of my car, an 06 sport, bought it at 37k miles, engine went out at 54k. Mazda replaced the engine, no questions asked, didn't even have to show maintenance records.

Munday Mazda in Houston. I will say that I want overtly impressed with the service. I wouldn't say it was terrible, but there was a few small things that irritated me. First, it took almost a month from the time I dropped it of to when I picked it up. It had a cel for a misfire when I picked it up because they didn't reset the computer, I had never had any cel's prior to the repair. When I went directly to the gas station across the street after picking it up, I checked the oil and found that the brand new engine was delivered to me a full quart low. They scuffed up my bumper lights and fenders pretty good. Broke one of the mounting ***** off the bottom of my airbox, and several of the writing harness clips, etc. The car was filthy when I picked it up, and I had written "do not start" on the windshield in paint marker and they didn't even scrape that off for me before they delivered it, I had to AK them for a razor blade so I could scrape it off before I could dive it home. My battery that was good was now completely dead and had to be replaced. And a few other little things. On the good side, they also replaced my cat, which I hasn't even asked about.

LOL
Mine does the same....and they call it a "smart" phone

I am thrilled so far with Sunridge Mazda in Calgary (Alberta, Canada) Right from the onset, the service advisor Anthony, was professional, courteous, and took the time to answer my questions and listen to what I had to say. After the car was trailered in (the lead rx8 tech Mario suggested I do not run it) I was allowed to speak to the lead tech, and we chatted, I explained everything I had done, diagnosed, repaired, replaced and my driving habits. Then when he did the compression test, I AGAIN got to speak to both of them at length.

From the onset BOTH of them were exceptionally helpful, knowledgable (not that I am with the 8 yet) and more importantly, seemed genuinley wanting and willing to help.

This experience alone has made me comfortable, and a customer for life with them.

IF I ever buy another new car, Sunridge Mazda will be my first choice, should I buy new.

And for the record......with the exception of an old P.O.S. celica I had years ago....this is my first import......until now I have always been a hardcore Dodge man.....

New engine without question, but bad service in the end...lol
