Do you think your cat is going out? Want a fix that's easy and not illegal?

So after changing the spark plugs and coils and wires I still had a missfire at high rpms. The good news is all the above was in need of changing anyway. My stock coils had 88k on them.

Well we narrowed the probelm down to the catalyst. It was the only thing that made sense.

What was happening to me:

-Could not redline the car at all
-Car would miss bad over 5k
-Some misses would be so bad that the car felt like it was hitting a brick wall out of no where.

Now after doing my exhaust the other day, it's now nice and loud. So when I found that cat was starting to clog, I was determined not to gut it.

So I found this chemical called cataclean. (I don't endorse any products or get paid to mention them)

The product is designed to be used in the gas tank every few months to clean out the catalyst.

Well mine was really bad and I needed it cleaned now.

So I ran it through the vaccum line just like I would with seafaom. you will need a friend to keep the rpms up in order to completely burn the chemical. Otherwise it will flood out. Trust me I lnow.

I then took my car and drove around town for 20 minutes before I got on it. Well I heard the shift beep for the first time since I have owned the car. It was the first time I have been able to hit 9k.

The car still currently has some hiccups above 8300 rpms. But I figured another bottle of cleaner in the gas tank should even that problem out.

In my honest opinion this is way better then having to deal with a check engine light from gutting the cat. Or even having to take it off in general.

I would like to know if anyone else has used it and if it is actually safe to use it on our cars. It would really help me until Im able to take off the cat and see how bad it is in there

There's an interesting comment from Berryman's on this topics:

Cleaning Catalytic Converter | Berryman Products

I haven't used any such thing, but I do find it difficult to believe that a diluted chemical additive can clean the cat of ash while passing through it in gaseous form. Taking the cat out and soaking it in a special cleaner is obviously another story.

I will agree on this one partially, what people forget to think about is that a cat could be 2000 degrees when the chemical makes contact with it.

Though we are not scientist we can speculate to a extent. I believe that using the right chemicals over time with a hot catalyst would potentially break carbon free.

This is a bad idea all around. Your cat is probably hollow now with most of the honeycomb in your catback.

I gutted my cat yesterday and it was perfect and clean. Platinum, pladium, and rhodium are metals. They may be soft, by they are not that soft.

So I read a bit more about this. There are success stories of people using cat cleaners like this after failing emissions tests. From the chemical safety sheets, it also sounds like it's basically just injector cleaner, but injector cleaner isn't supposed to survive combustion. Maybe once this stuff burns it creates caustic gases...

There are some suggestions of removing the cat and soaking it in bleach. Could be another way around replacing the cat.

OP: I guess keep us updated on how it goes?

I saw an episode of wheeler dealer. They were dealing with an older car that failed emissions. The end result was hooking it up to a machine that fed several different chemicals in, I believe, through the fuel injectors. One magic bottle was for the engine, the other I think for the exhaust. They never said what the magic bottles were. But, the end result was a much better running car that passed.

@ Power, that cat had a significant street value....

This thread confuses the hell out of me. Let me see if I have this straight...

1. OP says he used a chemical to clean his cat and it seems to have worked to at least some degree.

2. OP comes back a few days later to say he gutted a perfectly good cat anyway.

I find claim 1 to be dubious, but I have an open mind. Claim 2 is beyond puzzling. A good cat is worth about $750 used, and the best midpipe costs $450 shipped. If he didn't want a cat (which is contrary to statements made in his opening post), he could have sold it, bought a midpipe, and pocketed the difference. Or, he could have held the cat in reserve and used it to pass emissions as needed.

I don't know where you are from but here the cats are worthless the junk yards won't give you **** and there is always multiple on Craigslist for 100$

I gutted cat beacause I wanted the exhaust free flowing.

As for emissions all I have to say is lol we don't have that here.
