So i topped up my oil, she seemed to drink a bit.
I made sure not to pour so quickly that it overflowed.
However when i check my dipstick, it was an inch above the full mark.

Only drove it home a short distance, and she seemed to rev a bit smoother.
But i'm worried i overfilled it.
What should i look out for, and am i just being paranoid?
Whats the worst that can happen, and what's the best that can happen?

All advice much appreciated. It was my first time topping her up.


I jus used the stock 5W-30 Mazda RX8 oil > is this good for an aussie summer?
After 66000kms on the above oil at 3-5000kms interval changes, should i switch to Synthetic 5w-50 for summer? or just stay the same?

 

If it shows it is overfilled then it is overfilled and you need to drain some out.

Overfilling it by an inch on the dipstick can only cause problems. You could have oil blowing all through your vacuum system and intake. It is VERY unwise to run the car in that condition. Drain some oil immediately.

There is no such thing as revving more smoothly because you added oil to the pan (or the gas tank for that matter).

Read the owner's manual to find how much oil you should be adding based on the marks on the dipstick. Coming in a little under the full mark is much better than being over the full mark.

Oil discussions are frowned upon on this board, because there is no consensus answer. Having said that, 5W30 is generally a good weight to use. Mineral vs. synthetic doesn't matter much, because it is much more important to keep it clean, which means oil changes every 3K miles.

 

okay thanks guys, don't have any way to drain it myself, so i guess i should go see my local mechanic?
it's due for a service next month. odometer reads 3000kms since last service. So i guess i'll just limp down to the close one, and see if they can help.

 

Don't wait until next month - lower that level now. Find a friend at work or take it to a service station to empty out some oil.

Run a search on Youtube to find out how easy it is to drain some oil out into a cut milk jug, coffee can, etc,

 

okay so i got the levels right at the local mechanic. All sorted.

Got it back, checked it, and saw they forgot the plastic shroud. Duh!

Also i removed the MAF sensor and saw a small amount of oil pooled in the bottom of the accordion tube. How bad is that? should i leave for a month? or clean now before more damage is done?

 

You need to clean all the oil out of the accordion tube and throttle body. It attracts dirt and creates sticky gunk that will cause future problems. You may actually need to clean it more than once to get it all out.

If the filter is wet on the back, you need to replace it.

You also need to clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner or contact cleaner.

In the future, add a little oil at a time and check it frequently to make sure you do not overfill it again.

 

Read the manual. The difference between L and H line is about two quarts.
