Dealership? Rotary Shop? Fix It Myself?
Hey Y'all,
This is only my 2nd Post - I recently bought a 2005 Mazda RX8 - I named it Piggy. :3
I know they're a lot of $$ & work to up-keep, & I knew before buying this one, that it would need work.
Now I just need to know what the best option would be for my first bit of work on it - any & all advice welcome.
I took it to the Mazda dealership to have a fuel pump recall sorted out that had yet to be fixed.
They called me today to let me know it was finished, but they couldn't get it to start because it was flooded & the spark plugs & such were fuel soaked.
(Not their fault, dealer I got it from in Oklahoma flooded it)
Dealership said they could de-flood it & do the tune up for 1300$.
I know these are expensive cars to up-keep, but 1300$ for a tune up & de-flooding?
Does that sound right to anyone? Or is that just the dealership being a dealership?
There's also a shop nearby in the area that I've heard really good things about.
They've been in business a few decades & they are specifically experienced with RX8's & rotaries in general.
From small stuff to a full on rebuild.
I called/emailed but they're not open on weekends, so I'm hoping to hear back from them Monday.
I'm guessing they'd charge about the same, maybe less, I don't know yet though.
Lastly, there's the option of de-flooding & tuning it up myself.
I've got very little experience with rotaries, but i'm trying to learn.
I want to be able to fix it if I can, but this is new territory for me, so baby steps.
What do y'all think the best option would be for a beginner?
Dealer? Rotary shop? Fix it myself?
Thanks in advance.

What they're charging you can be done for maybe $300, plugs, coils, wires.
They could charge you $1300, still not get it started, then suddenly you 'need a new engine'.
You can easily deflood and tune it up yourself. There are plenty of resources on this forum to help through that, as well as on RX8help.com (Written by a member here).
I'd get the car back, thank them for the work, and go over it step by step to validate what all needs fixing. Save your money for when you really need them.

thats exactly what the dealership said "1300 just to get it started - you may have to get a new engine". i wound up having it towed to rotary performance in Garland because eff that.
they got it deflooded & doing the compression test now. I'll know in a bit what needs to be done from there.

The guy working on it now is going to go through everything with me when I make it there (at work atm), but he did get it deflooded & said its running. compression test as i type.
if it just needs a tune up, I'll likely do it myself & just buy the parts from them.
