Dashboard light scheme troubleshooting

Curiously I couldn't find anyone else with this problem, so I'm wondering if I'm just a damned idiot and can't work the thing properly..

So. My issue is with the night time mode dashboard light (one click down from full brightness) with the blue lighting scheme. At night/dark, it flickers on and off for a few seconds here and there, but with no clear pattern. I can't get it to stay on the blue scheme. So I basically end up using the full brightness for night time-driving to avoid unnecessary lights flickering.

The weird thing is, in the same one-click-down position, when it's daytime and I'd very much like the full brightness white lighting to stay on, I can't get rid of the blue scheme!

Obviously the schemes both work, but somehow the dash thinks it knows the weather conditions better than I do. So is there some sort of light sensor/resistor connected to the switch? Would make sense if that sensor was malfunctioning, that the dash would receive opposite information.

Oh, and it gets weirder.

In addition to the seemingly randomness of the scheme changes, I can also force it to stay in the blue scheme by activating/deactivating the REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER.

While it's nice to have a way to control the scheme, I'd rather not use the defogger all the time.

Obviously some wiring needs attention. Any ideas?
