credit card prox key

Has anyone had to replace this before? Any suggestions on what would work for key less entry as an option to the factory key?
A local locksmith wants like $380 for the credit card key, just wondering if there are any other options on this?
The car is a 2011 R3, thanks

There are two parts, the credit card fob and then the actual key.

Key part #: D4Y1-76-2GXA
MSRP is around $80
Fob part #: NFY7675RYB
MSRP is around $300

You can get 25% off if you order them from any of the dealers who sell online.
Cheapest would be ebay, the fob is around $175 and the key is around $35. You can also wait for one of eBay's 15% off coupons. Just make sure the key is OEM, there are a lot of cheap key blanks that don't have transponders in them.

You could also check the for sale section for a used fob. I was able to snag one for $40. ebay also has used ones.

You still have to have it programmed either by a locksmith or the dealer. I haven't had mine programmed yet but the dealer said it would be $65 to program both the credit card key and the actual key. Other people have said their dealer wanted hundreds just for programming.

Thanks for the info Oats, its very helpful...
Is it possible to get some sort of other traditional keyless entry fob that can be cut and programmed to this car?

I think the only other options are from the Miata and some year CX-7. They use pretty much the same key except one has a hatch open button and the other has no trunk button. They have the same FCC ID (BGBX1T458SKE11A01) as the RX-8 fob so they should work.

Dealership around me was asking close to $500 for a new proximity smart key. I ended up buying a regular key ~$75 and a Viper 5706 2-way alarm system with remote starter for $450. Works from like 1km away. Way better use of the money IMO but you will lose the proximity features....
