I have had a coolant leak every since I squired my 8 . I pressure tested the cooling system and the spring clips on hoses were leaking . So I put real clamps on all hoses . Stopped that .
It was still leaking some coolant ?? Drove me nuts finding it .
I jacked her up and took underpan off so I could see bottom of radiator . It was not the lower hose leaking ... but some strange plugs in bottom of radiator ???
See picture of where it was leaking and what the "Plugs " look like .
There is no rubber washer to seal this up ??? Previous owner had just installed a new radiator before I got her .
Does any one know what that is ? See picture
If so should there be some type of rubber washer to seal the radiator ?
I have used some UltraBlack silcone see if that works . I waiting for it to cure up now ?

I can't tell what's going on there. The picture is a little blured. if it's a plug without a gasket. Try draning it, cleaning it good and using a little RTV.

 

Yeah it was hard to get a picture underneath her . I cleaned it good with acetone and used UltraBlack ' See how that works . Its curing now .
Radiator is drained ... Ill test it once ultrablack cures

Hard to tell...but those look like transmission oil cooler fittings for an AT transmission??

Even then..they shouldn't leak coolant

 

Thats what I was thinking they were AT oil cooler fittings not used on a manual transmission .
They should not be leaking !!!
I tried cleaning with acetone and putting silcone on then . That did not work .
I put a rubber washer and tightened it down and it still leaks ....
Im going to have to pull the radiator out and find out what the heck is going on !!
It is a new radiator trying to find out from previous owner where he got it from ?

 

Is it leaking out of the fittings? If so you could likely put proper threadef caps on them

 

Those don't look right. On my radiator (AT rad in an MT car) the transmission oil cooler hardlines are ~10 inch angled metal tubes, not screwed on fittings. Could someone have modified your radiator for an MT transmission oil cooler or something?

Do you have an AT radiator in an MT car by mistake, or were those lines hooked to something to begin with?

The integrated oil cooler is essentially a metal tank with fins in it running through radiator coolant tank. It's possible that either a bulkhead (normally keeping oil and coolant separated at the fittings) failed, or the oil tank itself failed from only having pressure on one side, leading to the leak out the fittings. I say the second one because I don't think the oil tank was designed to have pressure on one side and air on the other

Leak is from around the fitting , Not from the fitting as if it were an oil leak .
Talked to previous owner and got supplier info . Radiator is under warranty. Ill call tomorrow and see what they say .
All Radiators that I see on line for AT have a tube sticking out with a flare type fitting on it ?
Ill see what the supplier says ???

 

( scatches head) so do you have a auto tranny or a MT? If you've got a MT why are you screwing around with a rad that's not even suppost to be on the car? If it is a auto you've got biger problems than just coolant leak. Point is stop patching some thing that don't belong on the car and get the right rad if it's wrong and if it's right well get a new trans too cause coolant mixing in the trans fluid ain't good.

I agree with you . This is a MT .. wtf does it have a AT radiator in it ? Calling supplier this morning , see what happens ?
Previous owner installed radiator .

 

UPDATE again
I called supplier this morning , They only had radiators made for AT ...
I made an excursive decision , FI .. and ordered a correct radiator .No AT cooling lines on it !!
Also new radiator hoses and clamps . When she goes back together she will be correct !
She is parked for a week , till parts come in .

 

I would advise a new coolant bottle to go with it so you have no weak points in the cooling system.

 

Good choice! And don't hate on the AT rad in an MT, that's where I have my throttle body bypass running

Me and myster were talking to legot about his comment. As for the bottle just keep in mind when you go to change it latter the it is quite easy to snap the nipple off the rad and once that happens new rad time again.

 

Lol, the throttle body coolant lines run from the back of the engine (hot end), through the throttle body, then straight to the water pump again with no cooling. The normal bypass method involves connecting the TB inlet hose to the TB outlet hose which just sends hot coolant from the back of the engine to the water pump (at a higher rate than it would be flowing through the TB). Mine just sends that relatively small amount of coolant through the former ATF cooler before going to the water pump.

I don't think it helps much, maybe it warms up the cool end of the radiator and helps the heat transfer efficiency abit. I just did it because it's got to be just a little bit better than the normal mod.

 

Ill be very careful with that small hose on water bottle !
