Catalytic Converter Question! Please help.

Hello everyone, I recently got a CEL, and a dealer told me it was most likely my cat. I was going to get a TurboXS or Borla Cat-Back anyways, but i still need to find a new catalytic converter.. I saw this online, (click there) and wondered if i was to get the TXS Cat-Back, if buying this too would turn off my CEL!? Please help.

It says on the item disclaimer that it may still cause a CEL to appear.. The only options to get rid of the CEL are a COBB AP or a replacement CAT. BHR offers a catted Mid pipe that may not trigger the CEL. If your running around with a clogged CAT i would stop. It could cost you the life of your engine trust me.

Did the dealer actually check the code, or just fire off some random diagnosis? The cat code is pretty straightforward, it either is or isn't.

That tsx pipe may turn your light off for a while (or not at all), but it also might just blow out right away. These engines are like Alf, they have an appetite for cats. The high EGT is know to wreck lesser quality ones pretty quickly.

Well i went to a dealer, and he did a quick check for me for free with the code reader that you put under the dash. He said he thinks its the cat, off the top of his head. I believe that too because my car has a gas smell. So what should i do?

Confirm that it is the cat, which it likely is if you can smell excess exhaust fumes. Then it's up to you from there. Read the forums some more, there are a few threads around about aftermarket cats that list rough prices, some with how long they last. I don't have any first hand experience with any of them, so I can only regurgitate what I've read. If I was buying a cat pipe for my car, it would likely be from BHR.

Or, you can go cat-less and deal with the cel and exhaust fumes. It won't hurt anything, but if you need to pass an annual smog test or whatever you'll need to work around that.

Also, it could just be an exhaust leak somewhere between the engine and rear 02 sensor.
