Bang noise made when clutch was pushed in

I was driving my 8 today and when I shifted from 1st to 2nd it made a loud bang noise. After it made that noise I realized that my clutch felt a lot softer then it originally was before the bang. What could it be. Need help

Burst clutch. That's how my first clutch failed, clutch in on a shift (mine was 2nd to 3rd), it had started fracturing on the previous shift, and the clutch was holding it together against the pressure plate against the high RPM, I clutched in and -bang- clutch disintegrated. I could have kept driving the car, except in my case the shrapnel also lodged in the nose of the starter gear and the metal tabs 'locked' against the flywheel, so the inadvertent pull-over-car-off effectively disabled my car until I repaired everything.
