SK Apex seals need to be redone, gonna do them myself. but i have a Question

Does anyone have a ballpark range on how long it takes from start to finish? I'm talking from opening the hood to pull the engine, to closing it with engine back in ready to go..

The Mazda dealership near me quoted me at like 25 hours or so for it but I've also been told a certain job on my old truck was going to take me 12 hours from a dealership, and it took me about 5 or 6 at most.

I'm more or less just wondering because I'm going to be renting a shop space from a buddy of mine (who will also be helping me on it) and need to know how many hours I'll be looking at to get it done. I tried googling different things, but nothing really gave me an answer, maybe you guys can help! Thanks so much in advance!

you need to read a lot. you dont just change apex seals. are you using a lift? what kinds of toolls are you using? ever pull a motor? none of this really matters until you understand whats involved in rebuilding a rotary

since your new ill help ya out. theres a trick to change out the apex seals (if thats all thats bad).

remove spark plugs and front left wheel

put big ratchet with i think 19mm socket on ess bolt

have buddy slowy turn the motor over by hand stopping when the apex seals pass the plug holes

remove old seal and replace one at a time

drink beer

??????

profit

Well i plan on Getting a rebuild kit from Mazda with all the seals and gaskets, the works.

I have pulled a few engines before (i grew up on a farm working on trucks and tractors) as well as my buddy (hes a fulltime mechanic)

I could have access to a lift if i needed to.

is that really all id need to do to change the seals if that was all it was? ive never heard of this method before.

Im not even 100% sure if that is THE ONLY issue.. but heres a quick rundown of what its doing.

i bought the car for 1300 bucks, its in near mint condition, and has 136k kilometers on it.. the guy who owned it before me bought it and put in a new clutch.. 7 days later the motor started acting up.. It backfires a lot, doesnt want to rev properly, and wants to die every few seconds unless giving it constant throttle to keep it above like 2k rpms.. he replaced the sparkplugs through mazda thinking that was the issue but it wasnt. decided to park it and sell it and now i have it..

I figured worse case ontario, if i REALLY cannot get it running, i could part it out to a few rx8 pages im on and easily make my 1300 back. I mean, every other rx8 i found was being sold for 5-8k CAD and all of them were on the verge of needing apex seals or a rebuild.. so im looking at this car with around 5k to spend on it before it wasnt worth it for me to buy it.. I think im doing pretty good no matter how you look at it..

I'd bet a solid $20 all you need is ignition coils and the correct spark plugs.

But I still expect $20 at the end of this
