I have an ebay exhaust and headers. been on the car over 2 years now and never had a problem. the car managed 202 bhp on the rollers so no power loss. The only downside is my ears bleed when im driving it..

A lot of us here are purists, myself included. Why not drop a REW under the hood and keep the legacy of the RX alive? You can reach 500 rwhp with the correct setup. That is just my thoughts.

If you want drag speed go get a vette you'll come out cheaper and leve the 8 alone owning a 8 isn't about kicking arss it's about having some thing no one els does it's about the 9k red line and that sound no other engine can make and putting a piston engine in it is a insult to its history and the people that love it.

whats a REW swap cost? all said and done.

Dragspeed. I said the 8 will still be a good handler, cheap insurance, and look like its stock. I love the way the 8's look, and the interior is awesome. So hate me all you want because im not in love with 100% of these cars. This way ill have the looks of a 8, with the power of a vette. In the end, its my car and I like different. This car with a 400hp V8 is just that

If you're going to do the swap, why spend money on an exhaust that you'll just toss? Or is the current exhaust rusted out and you need something to tide you over?

That can't be true. A quick google search confirms the LS-1 weighs almost twice as much as the 13b (400 vs 250 lbs). 150lbs shouldn't affect the handling too much, but considering you're taking a perfectly balanced car and adding that weight right on top of the front wheels, it will definitely change the character of the handling. But hey, if you are looking for a car that drives like a vette that looks like a RX-8, you are probably doing the right thing.

I think they are about the same I believe. I would like to do that myself but that is waaaaaaaaaaay down the road. I just believe a rotary should be in a RX primarily.

ken, any swap I do is way down the road. Atleast a year, so i'd like some sount until then.
slkent, thanks for finally understanding
Hoosier, a LS1 swap is roughly 6k. I havent done much research, but I think the REW is harder to find and more expensive, but correct me if im wrong. Plus ill be selling the Renesis thats in the car to make up for the build

Do any neighbors want their neighbors to have loud cars? Its not like im revving up all day/night. Im a car enthusiast and they can kiss my ***. I dont want their annoying *** kids yelling and playing in the street, but is that a good enough reason to move, or sick my pitbulls on them? no

I find it interesting that you plan to spend thousands on an engine swap and don't want to spend a few hundred on a decent exhaust.

Why spend anything if your current exhaust is OK?

Back when I was a kid stock exhausts weren't very well designed, and if you gutted it or replaced it with something louder you'd get more power. But these days all that a cheap exhaust will get you is more noise and probably less power.

But maybe vengeance on the neighbors for having noisy kids is worth the trouble and performance hit.

Good luck on your getting money back on selling a used 13b you'll only get $500 at average and $1200 out of a sucker at most. No one wants a used 13b for eney thing but a rebuild so they are not looking to pay much as the rebuild is all ready going to cost. So your plans of here I'll give you this 13b and you pay for my LS1 swap are a pipe dream.

Hell I will take the motor off your hands. I want another 6 port on hand just in case or use it for a turbo build.

thats odd, because I asked on here a few months back and i believe it was 9k that said a 13b with my mileage, 60k and trans is good for 2500 to 3000.

Nothings wrong with the stock exhaust, Im just looking for a better sound. I still dont see how a bigger exhaust pipe, with the right bends lose power.... I dont expect it to gain any, but sure the heck not lose any.

No one answered what a full rew swap would cost.

Ken, its a 04, i doubt the exhaust was all that badass then either. If so, they would of made the pipes bigger

Bigger pipe isn't necessarily better, and can be worse. More noise isn't necessarily more power.

Induction/exhaust on the RX-8 is pretty interesting. Mazda didn't leave any low hanging fruit on either the inlet or the outlet.

to my knowledge the few things that would make a "aftermarket" exhaust worse would be the muffler, too many bends, bad bulging welds, and obviously too big of a exhaust. Care to explain how the ebay exhaust is so bad with power besides the exterior of the metals and welds ken? Also answer what a REW swap costs nowadays

I haven't got a clue what an ebay exhaust is. ebay is an auction site, not a manufacturer. If you're talking about a no-name cheap exhaust, I expect that problems would be whether it fit, whether it lasted (not an issue for you since you need it for just one year) and it having a nasty loud sound. Personally, if I were feeling inadequate I'd just go ahead and buy a bottle of Viagra rather than make my car louder. But that's me - ymmv.

I am looking forward to your DIY on that LS1 swap.

Let's see: fit, how long it lasts, noise. I don't see lose power in that list. You do need to pay attention to what people say when you're conversing with them.

I would never choose noise over the other two factors.

Take it to a dyno before and after the cheap eBay exhaust. I would love to know the results.
