TN 4.44 to 4.778 gearing

saw a cool thread in the U.K. forum

an S2 diff has 4.778 gearing, while the S1 has 4.44 gearing....and they are interchangeable!!

sounds like a nice off the line boost

anyone tried this?

I believe S.ear.CH may have done it.

That said, there's a youtube channel "Slip Angle" where the owner Quinn performed the swap. Sounds like it helped with the acceleration for 1-2 gears. Installation a PITA.

If it adds some jump would that mean that it shortens the gears in the end?

It does. Highway rpms will be even higher, about 4000 rpm for ~60mph. Top speed will decrease too as its gearing limited instead of drag/power limited.

Cool thanks for the info. I find that 6th could be a bit longer.... So I guess there is no perfect solution lol

With this car, it's an "is what it is" kind of car. You have to be able to enjoy it bone stock. Mods are expensive and there is so little power to be gained.

Honestly, you can say that for a lot of manual trans cars.

I guess car manufacturers assume people can't drive a stick? For a lot of cars nowadays, manual cars get worse highway gas mileage because they have way too short of a 6th gear while their auto counterparts can do a taller final gear while running on half of the cylinders(cylinder deactivation).

IMO manufacturers should copy manual V8 pony cars and reserve 6th for highway fuel saving. If you need power, downshift. If you don't want to downshift, buy an auto.

Now that my rant is over, the idea isn't bad but it's going to be pretty costly. 4.778 final drives are actually somewhat difficult to find from what I have been told. Makes sense, as S2 didn't sell in great numbers and you would just have to wait for a junkyard to have a manual there.

this is why you aren’t allowed to start new threads outside the new member area; the subject has been discussed multiple times in the usual forum areas.

If you feel there is relevant content to add, then why start a new thread spreading it all put in bits and pieces rather than adding it all in the same place?

because again, it’s not a new subject.

This should probably be New Member Rule No.1:

The RX8 has been out of production for over 8 years now, having first started production in 2003. If you think there’s something new that’s never been discussed or though of before, then think you probably need to think again and SEARCH more before starting a new thread. Multiple threads on the same subject only create clutter, spread information out in pieces, and make searching that much more difficult.

I realize some people like attention and will go out of their way to seek it; pretty much expected on any internet gathering place, but if you keep trying to start new threads on here looking for it, you can expect to receive it in abundance.
