2007 RX8 tech needed
New member looking for a good RX8 tech/mechanic on south side of Houston, TX.
I have a 2007 with 110k miles, flooded about 4-5 times. My current mechanic, not a rotary expert, says it's done for. It runs, but I won't drive it because last time out got me about 3 miles before cratering! I don't want to spend a lot of $, just want to be able to sell it honestly without feeling bad for the buyer!
Please advise!!

I'm not from Houston so I can't recommend anyone there, but I can recommend quite a bit here on the forum.
1) How old are the spark plugs, plug wires, and coils (many owners ignore those last two) mileage and time (replacing all 12 pieces is about $190 shipped to your door, less than an hour to install)
2) When was the last time the ESS was cleaned and reset? (completely free, takes a couple minutes)
3) Does the cold-start cranking time longer, shorter, or about the same as the hot start cranking time?

Ok, first, replace your ignition. The OEM ignition is already firing poorly enough by 30,000 miles to have lost around 30whp. At 80,000.... no wonder you are having trouble. Ignition health and regular replacement of ignition parts (or a significant upgrade) is CRITICAL to the healthy operation of the engine. And yes, ignition failure is the most common cause of flooding. A healthy motor, starter, battery, and ignition will never flood an RX-8's engine. NEVER. If you are flooding, one or more of those has a problem.

ESS is the E-shaft Sensor. It is next to the front main pulley. You should clean it periodically, as it attracts metallic debris, slowly shifting the pickup signal and the profile as a result. You can just wipe off the sensor face with a rag, the electromagnet is protected behind the sealed plastic. You may have to unbolt it first.

Since you have never cleaned, it, I recommend resetting the profile after you clean it. See Mazda's instructions here: http://www.rx8help.com/doc/tsbs/CLEA...FROM%20PCM.pdf
Since the starting times are about the same, it is unlikely that your engine is failing. However, until you solve these other items, you won't be able to properly diagnose that.
