Williamsburg Virginia Vacation Advice

Hi -

I hope that noone minds my asking on this forum, but my fiancee and I were thinking of taking a weekend down to Historic Williamsburg to blow off some steam from wedding planning, and I was wondering if any of the Virginians would know of a good hotel to stay in there? I was also wondering if anyone would have an idea of a pretty or interesting route for driving my 8 down from Philadelphia? Any recommendations are definitely appreciated and thanks in advance.

You could have stayed local for input!!! Kingsmill on the James...Fords Colony...You have to keep in mind I will only point you to really nice places that have golf courses. The Williamsburg Inn, tied in with the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course.

95 is a quick ride if you don't get caught in a traffic event!!! Eastern shore is a nice drive. Bay Bridge thru Norfolk and up 64. Haze you should have put the Nav in. You jump in the car and point the front end south. Hope the VA's check in for you buddy. BTW have you gonre to the car show, I have four tickets laying on my desk and I'm running out of time. Take care.

Hey John! -

Thanks for the advice. Having heard nothing back I already booked the hotel. A bed and breakfast right next to the old part of town, since as I am sure we all recall with horror, I don't play golf. I know, it's shocking.

However, thanks for the route info. I'm still looking for a good ride down. I've planned the better part of a day for it, and I want to see some pretty scenery and roads. I know the trip down 301 to the Bay Bridge. Is 64 a pretty road? I don't know that, and do you know any other rides down that way that would be pretty to see even if they are longer? I'm just trying to get my bearings.

I went to the car show after work on Tuesday, and it is bigger than the show has been before. There were some good (older) show cars like the Cadillac 16, and for production stuff, nothing was making more noise than Mazda. The RX 8 was getting a fair number of looks, but the 6 and 3 had people all over them while I was there. My favorites were the 6 hatch back which is huge and quite pretty, and the 3 sprt wagon which was just drop dead gorgeous especially for its price range. I did hear some people talking about the RX 8 while I was there, and all they could talk about was the "unworkability" of the rotary engine and the "constant flooding". I believe that that guy got his info off of this forum which is sad because I don't think that that is a true perspective of the 8 . . . at least not mine. The Bentley continental is worth looking at as well as the Aston Martin Zagato bodied DB7, dead pretty. It was a good show; I hope that you make it.

Also, I did check locally! I posted in the NE section, and I didn't say that I only wanted Virginians to respond. I just wanted people who knew the area to respond. Thanks for doing that! It's not like I've gotten alot of suggestions which surprises me. I expected people to have more advice for good drives to that area since it is so pretty in Virginia, but what do I know. Anyway, thanks again, and catch ya'- H

I'm embarassed to admit that though I live in Richmond and my sister went to W & M, and I spent a lot of time down there, I have no idea what the hotel situation is like. Parking sucks, I *can* tell you that. However, you can't go wrong with a B&B. Also, if you have a chance, make reservations for dinner at The Kings Arms- very nice atmosphere, very good food, and in Historic Williamsburg. Or, try the Trellis (also need reservations) in Merchants Square. The Death By Chocolate is amazing- an entire pound of chocolate in each piece...

Thanks Elara!

I'll definitely take a look at the king's Arms. The owner of the B&B suggested that I make reservations before I came down so I am going to do that, and the King's Arms was on his list to so I'll give that a try.

I can't blame you for not knowing any hotels in your area. I don't any in Philadelphia really. that's one of the things about living in a place . . . you never have to rent a room there.

Now, does anyone have any suggestions for driving routes? The 301 to 95 64 thing isn't bad, but i was hoping to try something that I haven't driven before.

Thanks again for the response - H

Once you get to Richmond, hop on Route 5 and you'll be able to drive past a lot of the plantations, and it'll take you straight to Williamsburg. It's a very pretty drive. I think it actually turns into Richmond Road, right in the middle of Williamsburg.

Another suggestion

I live in Newport News which is about 15 miles east of Williamsburg. The B&Bs in Williamsburg are really nice. If you booked one through the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation you will probably be right on the Duke of Gloucester Street which is the heart of CW. If not, most of the B&Bs (to my knowledge) are within walking distance of CW historic area.

We've eaten at all the taverns in CW and Kings Arms is my favorite. Make sure you call in advance to reserve your time because the taverns book up fast. There are a number of seafood restaurants in Wbg but our favorites are the Whaling Company and Captain Georges.

Another alternative route is to take Rt. 17 South off of I-95 in Fredericksburg. It's mostly farm country and not a lot of traffic. The police do keep an eye on it though, so you have to stick pretty close to the speed limit. Once you cross over the York River in to Yorktown you can take the Colonial Parkway to Williamsburg which is a really beautiful drive.

If you take Rt. 5 the Berkeley Plantation has a wonderful restaurant attached called the Coach House Tavern. You can also tour many of the plantation homes.

I hope some this is helpful to you. Enjoy!
