I think this must be the northern virginia's method of trying to reduce the population density. I hear they have lots of traffic issues and real estate is very high there. How to fix the problem? Drive the residents away with unreasonable laws and fines. IF they choose to stay, the state will get a shitload of money from them in fines and courtcosts, which will go toward further government development to further control said population.

Seriously, what other explanation is there?

No...not fines. User fees.

Our soon to be ex-governor is very open that this is a money raising measure.

Anyway, I signed the petition, and in the comment suggested that they cancel the Dulles metrorail project and use that money to improve highways. Not that they'll listen.

I heard on the news that Virginia is actually contemplating the expansion of this law to apply to non-residents as well.

I'm in - signed! I agree with traffic laws and all that jazz, but that is outrageous. We might as well start chopping off hands of thieves.

The problem with this law is that they didn't have the ***** to raise taxes, and just decided to soak one segment of the population. Most of that population may not be worthy of sympathy, but it's part of a pattern. They already decided to rip off drivers on the Dulles Toll Road to pay for the Dulles Metrorail project.

Which group's pockets are they going to target next?

Another problem is that the legislature is intruding on the judiciary. I suspect that the two judges who have ruled agains the fees were PO'd at the legislature and DMV setting the fine.

Anyway, this fall there are candidates who are opposed to the fees and to the rail project in its current form. I'll be basing my vote on those issues.
