Radar in VA
Radar in VA
Anyone in VA have any experience with detectors in VA? I have been without a detector since one failed me about 3 years ago and I will be moving back to VA soon....I wonder if anyone is running the V1 or Escort, or others without any VG2 problems....(eg. hand over the detector sonny and come with me back to the partol car)!
I'm from NY originally, used to be an avid radar detector user and after my "little" incident with smokey on the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel (83 in a 55-reckless driving-luckily it was dropped because his radar wasn't calibrated), I'm thinking about going back to using a detector. Maybe a V1. The fine for RD use is much less than being caught for speeding. On the RX-8, a RD can be concealed/wired pretty well behind the mirror. I don't know how much that set-up decreases the performance, but it hides it pretty well.
I don't know how long you have been out of Virginia but radar detectors are illegal in Virginia. Your comment about "hand over the detector sonny" is accurate. That will get you a bigger fine than speeding!
I too moved here from Columbia, SC I think you will enjoy the state.

I used to run one, but I was in south west virginia, never got caought but I know plenty of people who have....I never REALLY speed but it's nice knowing when your going 5-10 over that your not being watched...you know? I feel like such an old timer...having slowed down but hey, it's safer....
The last two places in the USA that still have detectors as illegal are VA and DC. Connecticut made them legal again years ago.
The fine is $500 and they impound and destroy your detector in VA.
I don't know for sure in DC. I only had one taken away in VA.

I don't THINK they destroy your detector in VA. I looked up the laws on this last year and I think they're required to give it back to you at the conclusion of your case....
The VA Code Online page is down right now, but in case it comes back up later....
