Exclamation Raceway Park Englishtown NJ needs support

http://www.etownraceway.com/news/noisemeeting.html

Anyone that can should try and attend this meeting and show support for a long time New Jersey tradition Drag Racing at Raceway Park. The Park has been in operation since 1965 and anyone somewhat familiar with the area knows it’s there. People that have moved in only in the last few years shouldn’t complain about a business that pre-dates them by decades. It’s not like the park runs JET cars 5 days a week at midnight, they have noise rules that they follow. The area of Jersey that the park is in has been undergoing massive home building during the last 15-20 years and many of the trees that once acted a nature noise barrier is now gone but it doesn’t change the fact that the Drag Strip was there first.
The harder it becomes to run a race track the fewer place WE car enthusiasts will have to safely run are 8’s. What happens when they start building homes in Watkins Glen, Pocono or Virginia raceway? Those homeowners can point to New Jersey and say, “ We want the same restrictions they placed on that track”.

I've been racing, and attending racing events, at Englishtown since the 70's. I sure hope that this legislation is killed. Raceway Park has gone through great expense and compromise to accomodate the noise concerns of the surrounding area. This includes building an abatement wall structure and adhering to noise curfews.

The township has been pulling the rug from under Raceway Park all along. They're the ones that approved the building of the McMansions in the area. The McMansions have taken the place of the trees (which helped to reduce the propagation of the sound), and are bought by the "not in my backyard" crowd (while it was in their backyard long before they arrived).

I've heard arguments that the vehicles that race today are louder than they used to be. That's bull too. Supercharged 500 cubic inch hemis with open headers were just as loud 25 years ago as they are today.

I hope these people are forced to just suck it up - you bought a house near a dragstrip. They race cars there. Wednesday nights and weekends there's racing. Sit back and enjoy the music of the motors!

What next people are going to start complaining about the noise of a school that they moved next to?

Noise pollution laws are getting out of hand. In NY they aer planing on baning the use of car alarms (can we say rise in car theft) and rumor has it that mr softee will not be allowed to play his music!

I wish i could attened this meeting but i have to work til 7 tonite there is no way I could leave the office at 7 and make it to monmouth by 7!

We have the same whiners here in the Tidewater area of Virginia. People around NAS Oceana, NAS Norfolk and Langley AFB are complaining about the jet noise.

These bases have been there LONG before anyone was living in those houses. They knew they were near the base and knew that jets make noise. So then they moved in with full knowledge of the noise that the jets create. so I think that legaly they have no leg to stand on. The bases were there first. If they didn't like the noise they they should not have bougth that house! Noone forced them to buy THAT house they could of found something quieter. They are actually trying to get a lawsuit together to have the bases shut down inorder to gain some peace and quiet! That is utterly rediculious!

the thing is all those people complaining bought their houses fully knowing that Raceway Park was there and now they want to tear it down. I hope they do not get strangled with so many restrictions that have to close.

That’s how they can “win” require the track to install some state of-the-art noise suppression system, build a 15’ high wall down the whole track, ban Jet cars or Nitro fueled cars or some other rules that will make the park have to raise fees and lower the number of big income dates they can run. Now if the homeowners don’t mind paying for it that might be a fair compromise but forcing the track to pay for these things is totally unfair.
Compare the cost of taking a family of four to a Yankee game versus a Wednesday night of thrills special at Raceway Park. Big time Drag Racing gives you the most bang for your dollar out of any major sporting event today. There also might be some class envy involved. Those people in their $400,000 homes don’t like the sight of 1969 blown Camaro’s being towed past their homes on the way to the track, “how dare those bubba’s bring those things into my neighborhood” Little do they know how much money drag racing can extract from a driver’s wallet.

Do to issues on the home front I was not able to attend. I know that makes me look bad since I was the one that started this thread but such is life and I can deal with the hit to my credibility. This story will make the local papers and I will post links to stories about it. All I can say that the little one in my avatar sure does change your day to day life.

expo1, you've got your priorities straight, and no one here ( I think) would dare question why you opped out. Especialy after looking at you Avatar!

I'm not even near where your are. But I've been watching this thread. As I believe was said before, this will affect all of us, eventually.

People can be so self centered, and stuck up... they assume that if they have enough money, they can do what ever they want. Yes, these people have no idea the cost of setting up, even a simple, race car... yet saddly... they seem to be winning the argument that money speaks more loudly then good old fashion sense!

Info about the Meeting

Well it looks like the pro Raceway Park people made their presence felt at the meeting. I think the politicians hoping to make a name for themselves under estimated the PRO Racetrack element. Here are two links to stories about the meeting

Asbury Park Press

Star Ledger

One quote from a Mayor of a nearby town was
"If we shut down Raceway Park, what's going to happen?" she said. "A couple of thousand of homes, which we need like a hole in the head."

That is very true; it seems that if you own more than 20 acres in New Jersey the developers will try one way or another to get your land. The land Raceway Park occupies would support at least 2,000 homes each going for more than 400,000. Looks like major restrictions on the park will not happen soon and at least for me this Sound of Summer

this has been going on for a long time now. its stupid that home owners in the area think they can change everything just because they bought a house near the track. they knew the tracks were there and they could have bought a house somewhere else. the noise situation is one of the many factors why the auto-cross track will never be finished. Raceway Park won't put up the barricades for the auto-x untill everything clears and they get the right permit. now with this noise-complaint crap, the auto-x will never open.
